85 F150 Overheating Problem

There She Blows
It has a 302 in it. The truck sat for about 2 1/2 years. I gave it a tune up and a new timing gear and chain put in it. Took it out for a drive and it started to over heat, so i brought it home replaced the water pump, thermastat, hose's and had the radiatore flushed. We'll it still over heated. The last thing i did was get a new fan cluch and just got back from triing it out, still no go.
If anyone has any other ideas your input would be greatly appreciated. THANKS in advanced.

If you don't mind try searching next time man...i answered this question like 2 weeks ago!

To me it sounds like your water pump could be the wrong one maybe...look in your radiator when the truck is running and if the coolant is barely moving then change your water pump to a later model. Also, the thermostat could be backwards....the spring should be facing the block!

Try this http://fordtrucks.com/forums/showthr...hreadid=137859

OR

Hope this helps!

Try running it temporarily without the thermostat installed. I've done this before to eliminate that as the problem.

If the thermostat is in backwards, won't the motor run cooler? Wouldn't it be open all the time? I put mine in backwards (cause I'm a bonehead) and it ran below normal. I drove it for about a hundred miles this way. So when I got to where I was going, I checked it and sure enough, I had it backwards. Turned it around and it went back to normal. Just my 'sperience (as DW would say).

another thing...do you have a radiator shroud? I accidently broke mine and have to find a good replacement and I will sometimes have cooling problems

No. It should do the exact same thing but with it turned backwards it would take forever for the thermostat to warm up enough to do any good for you....by the time it starts doing it's job your heads will overheat. Plus it will limit the flow of coolant throughout the whole cooling system.

I would run without one for a lil bit just to make sure it isn't your problem.

I have been running it without the t-stat and yes the shroud is on. It will run normal for about 10-15 mins then it just start to get real hot and over heats.

Fishmanndotcom are you saying try a pump off of a new modle truck. If not the part number is the same for anything older back to 75

If the engine came with a serpantine belt setup and your running V belts the water pump will spin backwards and not pump. If this is the case change the water pump for an early model one.

Was it stored without anti-freeze to where you may have a rust-caked block? I've picked up a 289 that drained pure water out of it when I flipped it over on the engine stand, and it sat for 3 years, so I have that concern for it as well. I heard it run-rigged up on a trailer with a radiator, but I didn;t let it run long enough to get really warmed up (the carb was shot, and we were having to bottle feed it). I plan on flushing it with a chemical, but I don't want to tear apart a good motor just to get all the freeze plugs out to blast out the passages. <p> I built a 352 once with all the best, and precision machining, and we never could get that to run cool. I agree with "check your timing", retarded ignition will make 'em run hot (and sluggish). I'd try advacing it till it pings, then back it off a tad. Could your timing chain be off a tooth? You mentioned that you replaced it.

Also make sure your lower hose isn't sucking shut. Sometimes they need a spring inside them.

You may need to have your radiator "rodded out".

After sitting for that amount of time, the lower cooling tubes may be clogged with sediment.

Most radiator shops can remove the tanks and clean out the core tubes.
