will it cause adverse damage to block off a port on the back of the head? i had bought a new head and the passage was not cast into the head. was wondering how much the engine relys on the fresh air for fuel mixture. if i remember right not much but i wanted to put it to you others out there and see if you had heard or experenced anything with this. thank you in advance
It shouldn't hurt it at all, you just won't pass an emission test if it is in your area, that port is the intake port from the air pump to feed it with oxygen to help burn up unburned hydrocarbons before going out the tailpipe. I don't know if it is going to effect the fuel mileage or not, it is upstream of the oxygen sensor, so it might cause a mileage drop, not sure though. Maybe someone else here has researched this better with harder true evidence. Electric1
thank you for your input. i am putting the truck back together from my second burnt valve grrr gotta love it right. i will keep you posted on what the milage does. it has been soooo long since i went farther than 100 miles on my front tank. and as of yet thank god iowa does not have emissions tests. once again thanks.
I had the same question, looking for the answer... I know if you swap out the engine and don't put any of the emission control stuff back on, including the air pump it runs like sludge, goes almost automatically into limp mode. I took mine into the dealer and because the computer was looking for some adjustment it makes to know if the ox senser is working, and when it doesn't see the result it thinks it's broken and goes into limp mode. The Ford mechanic couldn't even get it to do the Key on Engine running test, got no codes dumped at all. Replaced all that emission stuff, including the air injection at the back of the engine (new tubes and check valves etc.) and it runs pretty good now, haven't had it back in for a re-check. Now I need to know if I can use the GT-40 engine outta a 97 explorer in my 88 Bronco, because it doesn't have the air injection, or the holes in the back of the heads... ANYONE KNOW?:-X11
Have a 90 f 150 5.0 with a 5 spd, Put in a motor from a 88 crown vic (roller cam) No air pump, and blocked off the ports on the back of the head. Motor runs great with plenty of power also have the EGR plated colsed and no codes on the computer.....
I am also running the GT40P heads with no thermactor ports, and the truck runs great. I pulled the thermactor tube off, and the cats are gone too, so I bypassed the pump with the belt. I haven't had any probs, but I don't get smog tested here in SC. Good Luck.
well thank you all for you input. i got my stock pup running again and it is doing just fine. no codes and nothing out of the ordinary as of yet. just wanted to keep you updated thanks again
