The eco has a bit of turbo lag that probably makes it feel doggy at launch. I test drove a 5.0L and my eco the same day, the 5.0 had 3.55 gears. I was very much more impressed with the eco but I was expecting some lag.
If I ever take the plunge and buy another truck (very very doubtful) I'd get the exact same drive train as I have now.
I think the 3.31s are fine for most all-around driving. Going up a windy mountain road, I get better response if I'm in tow or sport mode, as otherwise, you're always one gear too high.
I punched it the other day when I was leaving from a stop light & it still broke the tires loose (as in burning rubber). If that's happening, more power and/or gear is not what you need.
I will picking up few days just can't get back to sign till Tuesday. Gonna miss very very badly my 15 diesel but was a good deal and got great money for my trade. Who knows couple years all the new and improved trucks will be on the streets.
Congrats on the new truck, and as you say, new stuff is coming out all the time. By the time you are looking at your next ride, they will come with 10-speed transmissions, and maybe some new stuff in the SD lineup too.
Enjoy the truck and post pics when you pick it up.
