UPDATE: Thanks guys..

Sorry, I was trying to reply using my phone and I guess it wasn't working!

I'm from around Knoxville, TN in East TN.

UPDATE: So I went to the Ford dealership and bought a Ford CPS and it started right up and ran much smoother. However, it still has a very slight miss. This could be because it was still relatively cold? Any thoughts? Time will tell if the CPS stays the fix it seems to be.

Thanks so far for the recommendations.

You are in back yard man. Probably need to do an oil change. As mentioned, the Lucas is not intended for these trucks

I'll put an oil change on the list. Thanks for the tip. I had only put it in there because the bottle said Lucas for Powerstroke Diesels haha. Then again I'm still pretty new. Still would like opinions on the slight miss at idle..

The original Lucas additive allowed for the oil to foam up, causing major problems with the HPOP. I assume the PSD formula takes care of that issue. To understand what all that entails, you kinda have to understand what the motor oil in the 7.3 and 6.0 is asked to do. Basically, the motor oil also has to act like hydraulic oil. The HPOP builds pressures upwards to 3000psi in the 7.3, and over 4500 in the 6.0. Personally, I run synthetic 15w-40 in my 7.3's, but some run 5W-40 synthetic in theirs, especially in the winter time for those that live in some real cold places. Reason being, the High Pressure Oil system likes the thinner oil, makes for quicker startups, and can quieten the injectors some.

Does the miss go away as it warms up? It may be a poppet issue on a single injector.

If this is not the cast I would inspect the under valve cover harness for splits, melting, etc. See what you find there and get that oil changed. I do not think Lucas will be causing your issue but there is a possibility.

Ok so unfortunately the new Ford CPS did not provide the magic bullet I had hoped. I took it out to run an errand and after ten minutes of driving it bogged down like it had no power at all. For instance, I could have the pedal floored and be going ten miles an hour and as long as I wasn't going uphill it would very slowly accelerate. Idles super rough with a hard start when I restart but then randomly will completely clear up and run with full power. This is such a mystery!

Give the valve cover harness a look. It is highly suspect with your symptoms. There are other possibilities but it is easy to verify its condition before looking for the next possible culprit

I agree with Ben. First time it happened to me I reported back here that they are OK. I'll never forget a guy said "LOOK AGAIN"!! I looked again with a magnifying glass and sure enough, I had burnt pins.

I just inspected the harnesses and I may have found one with a burnt pin. I'm including a pic. Also I found that each one had oil on it. So, just for good maintenance I'm going to go ahead and replace the valve cover gaskets, harnesses, and glow plugs. Even if it doesn't fix the problem, it should make the truck that much better off. Any opinions on the pic?

GP terminal on the far left (relative to the pic) looks a little toasty. In itself, that's not enough damage to cause a short to the adjacent injector terminal, which is what usually causes this sort of kerfuffle. But if that terminal is damaged externally, there's a good chance the corresponding terminal is damaged in the gasket, or in the connection under the cover, and _that_ may be shorting to the injector terminal. To protect the IDM, the PCM has been known to disable the injectors on one whole side of the engine when this kind of thing happens. Def. worth looking inside. Whatever you decide to replace, be wary of the Dorman products; their history is, er, not the best. There are vendors who support the various forums and who sell OEM kits; IIRC, RiffRaff is one of them.

^^^ agreed. You may consider doing the super duty harness. Do a search here and you can find multiple threads on it. The pins are a little beefier which helps reduce failures. It is a little more work since you have to splice some wires but everyone seems to report success with them

The one second from the right looks is an injector and looks a little suspect to me too. Definitely time for new parts.

I agree with Darin, plus they sometimes are worse on the inside.
