High Output Heater

Just picked up a parts truck and it has a High Output heater in it. Just wondering if these boxes are worth saving?

Lightbulb High Output Heater

Hey Colossus

I've got a H/O heater in mine. The body and cab are
rusted out pretty bad, truck was tagged in Wisconsin
before coming to Oklahoma. Have a '79 parts truck
with factory in-dash air that I'll swap cab & body onto
mine.

My question is- can the H/O heater be retained if
I swap cabs? I'll swap the factory A/C over because
it works. I'd just like to keep the heater- it rocks!

Thanks in advance for your advice and help!

Don't know. I know the high output heater was available in the Custom package. My truck doesn't have A/C so I can't tell you too much about it. I have yet to work on it and hope I don't have to. Ask Mil1ion

The only difference between a standard non-a/c heater and the high output heater is the size of the heater core. The high output core is longer. I've never had my factory a/c truck apart, so I don't know what it has for a heater core, but, I do know it puts out the heat well. It may already have the larger core as part of the a/c package. Can't say for sure though. I would take the cores out and compare them. If the cores are the same size then it already has the high output heater. If not, you should be able to take the spacer out and use the larger heater core from the high output heater.

Probably the fastest way to find out is to call a radiator shop and ask about buying a heater core.

If he asks whether is the H/O heater & has A/C or not, that would be a clue.

High Output Heater

I never knew there was a "high output heater" available. If its just the core thats different than can I get a high output core from auto zone or somewheres and swap it into my bronco? It doesnt even put out enough heat to keep the windshield from freezing. It seems to me the whole heater box should be the same as the pick-ups.

The plenum for a HO heater is NOT the same as a standard, nor is the core, although the prices are the same for cores.

Besides, all OEM equipped A/C trucks have HO heaters, it's part of A/C pkg. You can't get std Htr plenum to bolt to A/C Plenum.

HO htrs don't function same as standard heaters. Blend doors are different and so is crossflow routing. HO put out a lot of CFM. Std system do not. Std sys are adequate with a good T-Stat.
But HO will drive you out of cab with a low temp T-stat if it's run on high/full.

All Super cabs & Crew Cabs also came w/ HO Htrs too. If you want to move ot, throw it on e-bay for a hundred fifty bucks. I recently sold a 79 A/C set up complete, on e-bay for $561 +frght.
I put a 300 reserve on it and it nearly doubled!

So basically I would have to change the whole heater assembly over to get the HO unit. Was the HO available without ac? I guess that puts it way out of my price range though. Guess I'll have to keep my heavy jacket and gloves lol!

Not to hijack the thread but does anyone know of an option on the fan motor? It would be nice to have a faster (more cfm) high speed at times

Nah !!! You don't need an A/C to get an HO Htr. Colossus is 100%absolutely right!! HO htrs were popular & plentiful.

HO Heaters are standard fare w/ all A/C systems, & in all Super & Crew Cab trucks F-150 through F350. They were optional in all other F series 73-79. The Super/ Crew cab, or optional, non A/C, HO heaters is 1 you want.

You don't want an A/C 1, unless you want A/C also. But you do need HO type Plenum/case heater systems guts go in, Plus a HO control out of dash board, altho' funky, it's possible adapt std heater controls to a HO Htr. but HO Controls are much better.

Any Super Cab, or Crew Cab w/out A/C should have an HO unit, unless somebody changed it. Also HO Htrs can be found in other F series, but you'd need to know what one looks like to recognize it if you saw it.

Autozone carries HO Heater Cores & all HO Cores are same A/C or not. They cost about $35.00, which is same as I pay a Modine Dealer. FBp

The Ford catalog lists a different heater core for the HO heater (C6OZ-18476-B). It specifies that it is an 8" core.

The plenum also gives a seperate part number for HO (D3TZ-18A484-A). The blower motor, fan, and resistor (and everything else from what I can see) are the same.
