Rear end

Hello everyone I have a 1979 f100 2wd with the factory rear end. It has the Factory 302 with a Factory 3 speed with Overdrive in the floor. It came with a 2.75 rear end which is a little high geared for the mountains of NC. Im wanting to run a 3.73 What all do I need for the change. PS sorry im new at this kind of stuff.

That's a big jump from 2.75 to 3:73. Have you run a gearing calculator to make sure this will be a good fit for you?

Being an F100 it should likely have a D44 rearend. Not sure if 9" were occasionally put in at the factory or if they were always aftermarket swaps but it sometimes happens. If you had a 9" rearend you could likely very easily find a 3:50 gear ratio 3rd member a junkyard to swap in and quite cheaply.

Post up a photo of it and we can eyeball it for ya!

And I agree that 2.75 to 3.73 is a huge jump! 3.00 or 3.21 might be better? I suppose that it depends on your primary purpose is and what rpms your looking for at the speeds you want to drive it at.

Here's the RPM calculator I normally use... it works pretty well. I always use the bottom part for manual trannies where you can put in all your info. Engine RPM Calculator

Does the rear end have a bolt-on cover on the middle, back side of the housing like this? If so, it's a Dana 44.

....or, does it have a 'hump ' on the back side of the housing and no bolt-on cover there like this? If so, it's a Ford 9-inch rear end.

If it's a Ford 9-inch, there are no factory 3.73 gears for that rear end. The closest you'll get with factory 9-inch gears is 3.70:1.
