Mode$06 does not help me, as mentioned I don't have the scan tool to process that kind of data.
Guess I'll buy an individual COP and systematically swap till i find the bad coil.
A scan tool that does a decent job of Mode 6 is about the same as shotgunning parts swaps without knowing what's what. Look for an older gently used Actron CP9580---nice scanner for the money.
Ah, heck! Your Android device, a $20 (or less) OBDII adapter, and a $5 app is all it takes.
mode$06 with projectSHO89 in an advanced search only brings up 256 individual threads.
Unfortunately, the site's Search function is fairly retarded and won't properly search for the character string mode$06. Evidently, the software truncates the search keyword at the $ symbol.
The intermittent miss would come and go, I keep waiting for it to be a constant in an effort to isolate which cylinder. Since it was never consistent I purchased 10 Denson coils and Motorcraft spark plugs from Rockauto, just bite the bullet and get it over with.
The install took me 2.5 hours, half of that time was spent on the number 4 and 5 cylinders. That plethora of metal tubing and hoses was a pain in the @$$. I did discover a few strange things along the way......
4 and 5 spark plugs were in the worst shape, they had been in there along time. The #4 spark plug was slightly tighter than finger tight. Those 2 plugs were in there much longer than the other 8, I can only assume the previous owner gave up on those 2.
The #2 coil and the #8 coil gave me different readings than the other 8 coils, the 10 new and other 8 all tested at .9 ohms, those two tested at 1.3 ohms. I have no idea what this means.
The truck fired right up and immediately I noticed it was idling much better. Acceleration felt better and there was a subtle but certainly noticeable difference in audible tone at cruising speeds.
I've tracked every tank of fuel for milage since I bought the truck last year, I've averaged just below 11mpg. I'm curious to see it this makes any difference.
