FUELING PROBLEM

MY 04 E150 with the 4.6 recently developed a problem when fueling....I must operate the pump extremely slowly or the pump kicks off. I've checked both the filler tube and vent tube and both seem clear. Any Ideas or similar experiences?

I had this on a dual tank '88 club wagon. Separate fill hose and 3/4 vent hose to the filler necks. Dropped both tanks, new everything during the restoration (van sat 10 years).

It always seemed to kick off during filling before reaching full tank. I finally tee-ed the two vent hoses together at the top of the filler neck and that seemed to help. jim

Not sure how you're determining the vent tubes are clear but they don't seem to be.

Repeated over-filling the tank (of which I'm VERY guilty) can cause the vent tube to clog which creates your issue. Either run a coat hanger or wiring snake though the tube to make sure they're clear.

Also visually check to be certain one of the fill/vent tubes hasn't collapsed which can also lead to the hard to fill problem.

Its possible to service those hoses without dropping the tank but its far more challenging that way. Keep in mind those hoses are somewhat specialized so cannot easily be replaced with off-the-shelf tubing----they aren't the same diameter all along their length.

Thanks for the reply. I do tend to over fill, too. I removed both hoses from the steel filler tube and blew air into the tank from both. Both took air. With the fuel hose I easily ran a garden hose into the tank. For the vent hose the wire I ran into it seemed to stop at the top of the tank and I figured I just didn't hit the steel tube at the top of the tank at the right position to allow the wire to go further. Maybe I'll try a sturdier wire(coat hanger) to see if I can get it to go all of the way to the tank.....

The little vent line on my 05 midship tank has a copper looking washer just ahead of the connector where it attaches to the tank that washer has about 3/16's hole in it. Make sure it is clear. Most often the slow fill is the vent hose coming off the evap canister above the spare tire. The hose comes off the square looking box call a separator then it goes over the axle and vents to atmosphere the line can become clogged by spiders mud dobbers and other varmints. Check it. Canister vent solenoid can also cause this problem.
