I have a 1993 3.0 with 113,000 miles. When I shift into drive, reverse, and park the van makes a loud noise, and it goes in these positons hard. The tranny apears to be fine at this point, shifts when it is supposed to and runs out great when crusing. Fluid appears to have the right amount in it and the color looks good. I have driven many other Aerostars and this is not a normal feeling any ideas would be helpfull. Thanks
may not be your tranny, may be your universal joint. i asked a similiar question several weeks ago. you need to check your universal joint for play, could be causing that clunk. search forums for how to check it. i think i was told to raise the rear, place trans in neutral and manually trun driveshaft noted any excessive play. if they are still good ,i believe it will turn the wheel immediatly. if loose there will be a lag between you turning it , and seeing the wheels spin. the oyher guys now more about this. you could do a search of the forum using u-joint or universal joint as key word. just my 2 cents worth.. good luck rick

Really all you have to do is reach under the van and grab the drive shaft & give it a good shake. Any back or foreward (sideways) movment, you have a bad u-joint. If bad replace both the front and back u-joint.
I was told that any perceptible play in a U-joint means it's toast.
Grab the driveshaft on either side of the U-joint. Try to twist the halves in opposite directions. Any perceptible motion between the cross and the bearing cap means it's going south. You need to check all four points of the cross, too - it's possible only one is bad.
I've replaced a few U-joints where there were no needles left in a couple of caps - just rusty dust. I didn't have to crawl under to do the diagnosis on those ones. They have a distinct clunk when changing direction when they're that bad.
I had this problem before. one of my engine mounts (not the rubber damper, the mount itself) broke. After a few thousand miles, the mount broke completely and the engine dropped. cracked my steering rack with the harmonic balancer. It was a mess. It may not be your problem, but i'd look into it...
