Worked all day changing out 3 speed manual trans on my 54. Got a good deal on trans just been rebuilt and the guy was getting rid of it to go back with 302 and c4 trans. I looked trans over real good (I thought)and every thing look the same. Finally after about 8 hours I was ready to put everything back on linkage etc. Then I realized that my old trans had a bracket above the arm linkage that connected to the equalizer bar. My new trans didn't have an place on it for the bracket. When I say equalizer bar it is bracket that the clutch rod hooks into. Is there any way around this because now the equalizer bar has nothing to mount to and I don't have a place to hook the clutch rod. The old side cover on my old trans (9 bolts) has the 2 threaded places for the bolts but new one doesn't . Any ideas would be appreciated.
What was the old trans off? If it didn't have the holes for the bracket, it is likely for a 48-52, in which case it will have the wrong input shaft length. Or it could be from a '57 + that used a hydraulic clutch, but should have the correct input?
ALBUQ it is out of a 1958-60 and yes the input shaft was exactly like the old one. That being said cad you swap the side covers and how hard is it to do. Thanks you and 52Merc for your response and I will wait to here back before I pull it out.
By the way when I bought it it did have the slave cylinder on the bell housing since mine wasn't set up for it I pulled the trans and put in my bell housing. Was this ok or did I mess up? Thanks again guys.
One quick question guys. I am going to swap the gear shift covers like a few suggested and was needing to know if there is a lot involved etc. It looks like I take the shifter arm of and then the 9 bolts holding the cover. Is that about it or do the gear shift arms need to be in a certain position before I install on other trans. Also are any small parts going to fall off when I start to remove the cover.
I hate to sound stupid but how can I tell with the trans out of truck if it is in neutral. Was going to try to swap covers out tomorrow. I have the old and new trans on the table so I put levers in same position will this work. If not can someone walk me through how to get it in position to put the shift cover on right.

Just turn the input shaft by hand while you manually try different positions on the gear shift levelers and when the output shaft stops turning you are in neutral.
