AXLE RATIO

I have a 2009 F250 with a V-10 and 4.10 axle ratio . Ford rates my vehicle at 14,100 reference pulling a fifth wheel . Data shows if I had a 4.30 axle ratio , the total would be increased to 15,600 . If true, would the expense be worth while to have a 4.30 axle ratio installed ? Also, any idea what the price should be approximate ? Thanks in advance !

Will

I think in order to answer the question on gear ratio to the best of our ability, we would need to know the goals for your truck. Are you looking to tow a 15,000 lbs 5th wheel or are you pulling a 8,000 lbs travel trailer?

I cannot say for sure, but I think that a gear swap is around $2,000. Also, as far as I know if you have a 4x4 you must match the front with the rear differential and that makes the price go even higher.

Thanks for the reply . Thinking of buying a fifth wheel that weighs around 14500 loaded out . Yes, I do have a 4x4 . Forgot about front differential .

there is very little difference between 4:10 and 4:30... and $3,000 plus to do both axles...

lighter 5th wheel trailer... or a bigger truck.... or both.

and remember... posted weight is not loaded weight... and not all trailer weight is correct...

get trailer scaled. mine is OVER by 800 pounds. both tags are wrong.

I don't think it would make much difference myself.

May not go as fast up the hills.

When I was shopping around for gear change info estimates were in the two grand range for both axles to get done, I got lucky and found a pair of axles already done for much less and swapped them in instead.
If this truck is going to be a dedicated tow rig for the fiver then the money would be better spent to jump from 4.10 up to 4.56, better pulling performance and enough gear change to really notice the gains.

After pulling a 12000+ pound 5er with an '06 V10 and 4.10 gears, the change to a 4.30 just does not make economical sense for a less then 5% change. I would be more inclined to look for a 6.7 diesel powered truck if you were intending on doing lots of touring in the mountains. The V10 does work well but you just have to get used to it shifting lots and watching the rpm's on the tach climb as you slow down on long steep grades

You're thinking about changing only the rear, not the front but you have 4wd?

Love to see how that drives down the road.

How much of a difference did you notice when pulling with the different gearing?
