1989 F150 exuast

Hey yall, I am completely confused (mind you I have 0 experience with exhaust) I have a 1989 ford f150 with shorty headers on it (like that when I bought it) and I am switching them beck out with stock manifolds along with completely redoing my exhaust all the way back but I CAN NOT find another down/Y- pipe like this one (BTW the dual pipes running back have cats [witch I'm also getting rid of] and the it turns into an X pipe before the mufflers. can anyone give me some information on this? Im pretty slow so please spell it out for me.

That isn't a stock Y pipe for an F150.. I don't know what it is actually but in any case just go to summit racing and search for "cat converters" for your truck and you will find several Y pipe and cat combos and you can order what you like.

And why would you be going back to manifolds?

Well I don't want cats though.. and becuase the headers heat up the pipes going past my starter so much that it ruins my starters. I've went through 3 starters in a year.

Yeah I know that.. but if you do the search I suggested you will find Y pipes too.

Are you sure it's not just all the holes in the exhaust that did that? Manifolds won't make any difference in the heat those pipes generate but headers definitely out perform manifolds.

Yep, I'd say it will be next to impossible to find another cobbled together y pipe like that. If it was mine I would keep the shorty headers and get a y pipe with a single high flow converter instead of the two that originally came on the truck. What is your reason for getting rid of the converter? A new high flow one does not really affect exhaust flow and it is technically illegal to not have one.

I'll agree with the others, the shorty headers are not the cause of your starter problems. But if they are as rotted out, as the Y pipe, be a good time to replace them. Shorty's are as inexpensive as it gets.

When you search for a replacement Y pipe, include "off road" in the search, that's the catless variety,

That Y pipe looks like a true dual conversion. The pipes look just like mine.
Shorty headers do not heat the starter up to the point of it failing. I've had my setup for over 60K miles without a starter overheated problem. My local exhaust shop and I have discussed replacing my Y pipe with new true duals. Check around locally a little.

I put a stock replacement Y pipe on my '89 302. Got it at Napa. The cat was a separate piece and I left it off. Bolted on without a hitch.

That is a stock Y pipe that someone cut loose and made it into duals. If you want duals again then just get a shop to duplicate that pipe using a new stock Y pipe like I bought. Depending on the shop you might not be able to get "no cats" with federal regulations mandating they be there. But if the shop don't mind?

How do I find more like this one? This is the only pipe I've found that I want but it's expensive and the guy at the exhaust shop quoted me 300 bucks to custom make a Y-pipe anyways.. does anyone know how to find more like this?

Bassani is pretty much the only game in town and they price their products accordingly. The pipe you linked to is an x-pipe, not a y-pipe.

Perhaps a bit cheaper alternative is the Y-pipe designed for the Bronco/F-Series:

Bassani 58150B2

I used the above on my old 1992 F350 w/5.8L engine. Fit like a glove.

Okay that's cool that might be what I have to do then... and i know thats an X pipe but i dont know what else to call the pipe that comes off the hedders but a Y-pipe. If you search for X-pipes all kinds of stuff pops up and I really want true dual pipes.
