I have a 65 Ford F100 with a 3 speed column shift, I bought the truck and someone had transferred the column to a floor shifter. From what I can tell is that the shift linkages have been flipped backwards and set up the floor shift, and believe it or not there is no "H" pattern it's straight forward and back. So, my question is, what is the most likely thing to fail on a column shifter? From the break downs I see there is numerous parts, just hoping that there are some common culprits.

From the pictures, it looks like the Hurst Indy shifter or similar. Forward and back gives you 2nd and 3rd with neutral in the middle, push to the left for reverse and first.
Yeah, that's definitely the same style shifter I have. Yours might be the Mr Gasket version. You showed what should be 3rd and 4th. Reverse and 1st should be to the left. The linkage looks a little rusty, maybe it's binding up. Here's how it's supposed to work:
Thank you inline66, the problem was the Chevy blazer center console in the way? So back to my ordinal problem, I have a steering column that has all the guts for gear shifting but don't have the lever to change gears. The only thing I can think of is to buy the lever and see if it works but with my limited knowledge I wouldn't know what to be looking for or listening for.
You'd also need the linkage between the column and the transmission. Check out some diagrams to see how it all goes together. If you just want to be able to drive it, I'd recommend getting the floor shifter working. Easier to do at this point, and many like it better.
Thank you all for your help, I have the connecting rods that go from the steering column to the transmission. The floor shift is working, the center console was in the way. The steering column does not have the lever to switch gears, my assumption is that something has failed in the steering column to make them remove that and switch to a floor shift. So....what is the weak point, what should I look for when I get a lever and place it in the column?

The pot metal shift collar that the shift lever fits into has an internal bridge that connects it to the shift tube. Over time, the bridge begins to crack, eventually snaps off.
When this occurs, the shift collar is no longer connected to the shift tube, so the lever just flops around.
People are unaware where to find a replacement, so they install a floor shifter instead.
There are 100's of NOS 3 M/T shift collars available, same: 1965/77 F100/350 & 1966/77 Bronco.

I have a complete column from my 1966 F100. I bought another so I could get it cleaned up and then powder coated without having to shut the truck down for a couple weeks. I know it most likely needs all the bushings and bearings, but the Shift collar is good, and most of the major parts are good. I would gladly give it for the cost of shipping.

Hi all, well I'm gonna bring this thread back to life. I still have the floor shifter and I have also been able to use it, but at times it will not allow me to come out of first. It will stay in gear and won't come out until I move the shifter around and at times put some pressure on it to come out of gear. I know it has fluid in the transmission, I'm hoping that it is the linkage that is sloppy. You can see by the pictures I posted at the beginning that the last pic it shows some sloppy connections. I'm hoping that it is the linkage and not the transmission but I'm open to listen to troubleshooting for either one.
