Getting my truck inspected I saw a brochure at the dealership for "Wynns transmission flush".....anyone have experience with this? I do my own oil changes, tire rotation's, tune-ups, etc., but the tranny oil is another monster. Can this procedure be better than dropping the pan and changing the fluid? Thanks
ovenrat,
This has been contested in the past, but I prefer to do things the 'old-fashioned way'. Drop pan, drain cooler and conveter and change filter. If you cannot do this complete procedure then a flush may be your only option.
When I don't have converter drain plugs, I drop the pan, change filter, and remove fliud return line from the cooler and then proceed to manually flush the converter into a suitable vessel.
When i worked at Monroe muffler we had a trans flush machine. We would drop the pan and change the filter first and then flush the trans fluid. I thought it did a great job. Did it on my 95 F150 and had no problems with the trans and i used it during the summer for landscaping. I sold the truck with 130,000 miles on it and it shifed like brand new. If at the Sunoco i work at now did it i would defintly do it to my vechicle. Now if you have a lot of miles to begin with i dont know if it would be such a good ideal though.
David,
They certainly do the job faster - that is why they were sold. To improve the profitability of the service department. I personally feel that there is value in manually doing these things as it provides me with the opportunity to visually check the condition of the transmission by examining the content and quality of the fluid and deposits in the pan and filter.
It makes money for the dealer and allows low tech people to do the fluid changes. There is a lot of kick back built into that system to get the dealers (service managers) to promote it. That is the best I can say about it.
You simply can not beat a brand new filter and looking in the pan for problems. BTW: The flush does not get everything out and if not done properly is worse than just letting the fluid alone.
Where I worked the transmission guys AVOIDED the machine flushes.
