As with most all popular Ford automatic transmissions, the C-4 went through different stages of improvements.
The C-4 was produced from 1964 through 1981. A C-4 from 1964-1969 will have a 24-spline input shaft. A '70-'81 C-4 will have a stronger 26-spline shaft. Valve bodies changed in 1967 and again in 1970.
There are two primary case designs in the C-4; a 'step' case and a 'flare' case. This is in reference to the front of the transmission casting where it bolts to the back of the converter (bell) housing. Step cases are primarily found in smaller Ford cars. The flare cases are primarily found in larger Ford cars and in the trucks.
A step case will have a case fill dipstick tube. A flare case will have a pan fill dipstick tube. --I have the stock flare case/pan fill C-4 behind an inline 240 in my '69 F100.
The better versions of the C-4 were produced from 1970 through 1981.
The one that I have is from 1973. Trying to find a reasonable price for a rebuild is tough.
Get a rebuild manual, the rebuild parts and build it yourself. The worst that can happen is the transmission fails. --even if it fails, there will still be (positive) things you'll learn from the experience. The best that can happen is it works and you learned something new and likely saved yourself several hundred dollars. The inside of an automatic really isn't that spooky.
I've never rebuilt an automatic and a '98 4R70W electronically-shifted 4-speed overdrive auto is certainly more complex than a C-4 but, I'm working on rebuilding this transmission as time and (mostly discretionary) finances allow.
