What would it take to put a c4 in my truck. I have a 77 f150 with 4.9L and a c6. I have 2 reasons one being the obvious, the c4 requires less hp, and secondly I can get a rebuilt free c4 that has set on a shelf since it was rebuilt a few years ago.
Second question would the conversion cost me more that the $500 for the only guranateed c6 I can find within a 100 miles?
I don't know about the C4 vs. C6, but I would think it might bolt right up. Someone else can tell you that. If not, though...
If you've got a few square feet of space to work on it, why not rebuild your C6? It would only cost you about $150 for the kit and a new torque converter. Its a pretty easy rebuild, especially if you only have to replace seals and clutch packs and not any hard parts. I did mine last year and it only took a few evenings and all I had to go on was a diagram I downloaded off the internet and an old textbook that I had on drivetrains. It wasn't too bad, and nothing beats the feeling of doing it yourself!

nope different bellhousings the c6 is bigger and longer. I would rebuild but I have neither all the needed tools to fix or get it out not too mention the lack of shop space.
While the c6 is more indestructable than the c4 there are all kinds of c4 trannys in my area for next to nothing, not so easy to get a c6 close at a reasonable price. Also a c4 will give me between 20 to 30 percent better gas mileage.

Where did you find this very interesting fuel mileage data?? I want to learn more. -Ed

I have had 2 mechanics tell me this and saw someone online (can't find his site though) had done it not to mention it makes quite a bit of sense since the c4 requires less hp to turn. The guy online who did the swap had a v8 with a c6 and when he switched it to a c4 went from 14 to 18 miles a gallon changing nothing else.
There was an article in Hot Rod a few years ago about how much power the various automatics used. Bottom line: It's important if you are drag racing, but otherwise, it's not relevant. Things change when you consider changing to an OD tranny but that's because of the OD, not the basic design shared by all big 3 and probably many import trannys.
If it is a smallblock C4, it will bolt up to the 300 L6
Make sure that they both have the same tailshaft length or you will need a different driveshaft.
