Starter Torque Specs.

Hey does any of ya'll know what I should torque my starter attachment bolts to. I have a 1989 5.8 351 Windsor 4x4. The Haynes manual says to tighten them "securely". The reason I ask is because I guess I don't know how "secure" securely really is and I ended up overtightening them and stripping out the threads. So now I have tapped in threads one size bigger and was just wondering if any of ya'll could give me a good torque spec. Thanks guys!

Geez, what did you use to tighten it down: 1/2" drive impact? I tighten them with a 3/8" drive ratchet. When it is snugged down I'm done. I found a torque spec of 15-20 lb. ft. One other thing is that I probably would have repaired the threads with a Helicoil and not a bigger bolt. Have you checked to make sure the larger bolt will fit through the starter?

Well I only stripped out the threads on one bolt so what I'm going to do is drill the hole out and put a bolt through there with a nut on the back of it. Luckily though, there is room for a nut on the back. Do you think this is a good idea? And yea a bigger bolt wont work. I haven't tapped the threads out yet for a bigger bolt I just drilled out the existing threads.

They make some neat thread repair options. Either helicoils or thread inserts. The insert might be better in this situation.

Coil Threaded Inserts | Solid Threaded Inserts | E-Z LOK

Don't have to worry about them coming apart like a heli coil could from repeated use. I've used them in alum transmission cases.
