Like I said I have two RDS tanks, one gravity one fuel pump.
On the second one I talked to RDS and got the fuel sender unit instead of sight glass. I then installed 12 V shutoff valve, wix fuel filter/water separator and Airtex fuel pump. Auto meter fuel gauge on dash is hooked to the RDS sender unit and all powered thru up fitter switches.
Fuel dumps thru RDS Gravity feed fitting into my rear tank(yes I have chassis cab).
The fuel gauge on aux tank is sure handy. This gives me 100 gal.
I much prefer the aux fuel tank sender/fuel pump than the gravity system on first tank, however it always worked fine, just wanted faster fuel transfer.
You will love your setup, I wish you safe and happy travels!!!
Thanks. It sounds like you have a great setup. Mine came with the fuel gauge in the cap. It seems to work ok. I put 15 gallons in it to start with. I don't know how all the trucks are set up, but mine has the information center in the dash that has 2 trip computers. It tells me how many miles I've been, how many gallons I've used, and average MPG. So even thought the truck's fuel gauge still reads full, I can tell how many gallons of fuel I have used out of the aux tank. In addition to that, the TorquePro app has a fuel gauge that reads in %. So far I have used 5.5 gallons and my fuel gauge is still at 100%. So I know I'm still running on aux fuel. When it drops below 100% I'll know I've used what I can from the aux tank. That way I'll know about how much is going to remain in the bottom of the tank below the drain. I probably won't fill it up until our first long trip for memorial day.

My tank also has the sending unit but I never hooked it up.
Do you happen to know what the resistance range is on the sending unit? I can't find any of my paperwork that may have the values.
I would like to buy a gauge that doesn't need to be calibrated.

I guess you are talking about a RDS tank. If so just call them, they are in Florida and are VERY VERY nice people. They helped me in many ways, and seemed eager to make sure I was a happy customer. I took the sight glass out and replaced with the sender unit however I don't think there was any paperwork with the sender but I'll look

I called and they gave me the info I needed. They said their sending unit has a range of 240 Ohms empty and 33 Ohms full. Autometer makes a gauge that uses that range.
Well I was trying to see how much of the first 15 gallons I put in the tank was actually usable but it didn't work out. I had used 11.5 gallons and the gauge was still at 100% when I had to go ahead and add some for my trip tomorrow. I put another 30 gallons in. I guess I will see what happens if I use that much through the weekend. It is kind of strange to drive all week and still have a full tank of fuel. By the way diesel went up $.30 per gallon this week.
Put the plastic rings in hot water for 10 mins or so.......Place the ring over the round steel pucks........Using a flat blade screwdriver push the inner edge of the plastic ring into the groves that go around the steel pucks. This is a PITA........Better to have two people doing this at the same time. Once that plastic ring seats into the grove around the steel puck, they will stay in place.
The dealers are supposed to do this......Most don't know how to. the rest are too lazy.
There are also 3rd party SS rings on the internet.
Hope this helps........
Finally got the donuts in. You were right what a pain in the ****!

That looks a lot better. I wish I had the plug for the gooseneck hole. The first trip with the tank was a huge success. I put the 30 gallons in on top of the 3 or 4 gallons it had left in it. I drove about 320 miles and used 29+ gallons before the fuel gauge dropped below 100%. So I guess there is going to be about 4 gallons of unusable fuel left in the tank. I am really happy with the investment.
I fill up the same two places every year (11 years) one just east of Kingman, Az and the other 50 miles west of Albuquerque. The NM stop is Indian reservation truck stop and the other is big truck plaza. 1800 miles each way just two stops. Very nice not waiting in lines and these two stops have the lowest diesel prices by far every year. Our other stops are for the dog and a quick walk for my tired back and maybe a sandwich.
You will love the fredom the extra fuel allows you. Lower fuel prices are just a bonus in my opinion.
Safe and Happy Travels!!!
