hyper shifting

what is the gear and shaft called the one on the outside of the back of the transmission on a 1991 ford f150 can anyone help me

If it's part of the transmission, it's the tail-shaft.

If it's the part that slides into the back of the transmission, it's called a slip yoke. After the slip yoke are the U-joints which hold the driveshaft to the slip yoke.

Are you perhaps talking about the transfer case? (if 4x4...)

its not a 4x4 its a 1991 f150 xl larret
would the tail-shaft have anything to do with the shifting of the truck
and do you know what i mean by hyper shifting
its driving me crazy

Changes in shifting pattern wouldn't be due to the tail shaft. And no, I have no idea what you mean by hyper shifting. Sounds like you need someone with a little more experience to have a look. You probably don't want to open up a transmission unless you really know what you're doing

what i mean about hyper shifting is it shifts through all the gears before im even out of 2nd and sometimes it shifts real hard into 2nd or 3rd

They call that shift stacking or stacked shifts when it goes 1-2-3 right after each other and your in 3rd at 20m/h (for example) and the thing is gutless then. Need to know more about your truck like what tranny you have to help further

There is a trans code on the drivers door jamb sticker that will tell you what trans you have. Some are electronic and you can get codes to help you diagnose.
