e4od transmission swap.

I've got a 1996 f150, rear wheel drive, xl, with a 300 I6 and an e4od trans.
It's got 160,000 miles to its fame. And that without much rust for its age.

This truck has been reliable until recently. The transmission started failing last fall, and needs either a rebuild or replacement. I'm not sure about doing a rebuild myself, but a replacement I know I can do.

That brings me to my next problem. The vast majority of e4od transmissions seem to be 4x4 trans. Not the 4x2 I need. I've not found 4x2 transmission I'd trust yet.

So, is it possible to put a 4x4 trans in a 4x2 truck? Does 4x2 and 4x4 have even similar measurements?

What are your ideas?

The general consensus is that the output/tailshaft assembly of 2-by & 4-by are completely different & can only be changed by completely dis-assembly of the internals.

It is doable & possible. But you are basically going through all the rebuild processes & will/would need all the specialized tools/skills, etc required.

Best is buy what you need or rebuild. Good luck.

You're sure on the rebuild part & not failing control issues?

I don't know enough about automatics to diagnose problems on them. I've had the truck to two different mechanics and they both said the trans needed rebuilding or replacement.

you need to take it to a ford dealer, yes, it may be just a solenoid body that's bad,

The trans clunks into and out of R and 1 and clunks downshifting from 2nd gear. Trans wont shift at all into 4th or OD.
Trans recently started to not even shift at all sometimes into R or 1st.

That trans is done.

You need to totally disassemble an E4OD to change it from 4x4 to 4x2.

You need a E4 that came behind at the very least a 96 (maybe 95, I don't know) 5.8, 5.0, 4.9, 2 wheel drive.

You might be able to convert an earlier trans to the 96's electronic control. (Again, I can't tell you one way or the other, but should be possible)

At the most you'd have to change the solenoid body. It might work they way it is, I can't remember which way the swap does work. In '95 the location of diodes changed from the PCM to the solenoid body (or the other way around, that's what I don't remember) and that was the only change.

The diodes moved from the solenoid pack to the PCM in 1995. Simple swap as noted by Mark.

So E150's and E250's are a dime a dozen (not literally) in my area, and I know some of them have the needed e4od trans. What van should I be looking for? (i.e., engine sizes etc.)
