Replaced both the vacuum pump and booster last February 2015. Maybe put 3ooo miles on the truck since then. No problems with brakes until it got very cold (0 degrees) 3 weeks ago. Went to start the truck and there was no assist to the brakes. Pedal was hard and truck hard to stop. Hooked up a vacuum gauge at the vacuum manifold last weekend (50 degrees out). Vacuum was 24 inches of Hg, hit brakes, gauge would go down to 15-17 inches of Hg, let off backs it would go back up to 24. When pedal was held down the vacuum would hold.
Today I installed a vacuum gauge on the dash (for some sense of security). Started truck and gauge read 24 inches of hg, hit brakes went back to 15-17 inches of hg. Did this several times no issues. Figured everything was good. Held brakes down and watched the gauge slowly drop to 5 inches. Let off brakes and the vacuum never returned to 24 inches. Couldnt get the vacuum to go back up. Looked under hood and did not hear any leaks. Weather is 35 degrees out. i cant determine if its the pump or booster. Any advice? Thanks
i agree. if it was the booster, it would either recover as soon as the brakes were released, or it would never create any boost at all when the booster was connected.
Before jumping to any further conclusions, you need to run a hose from the pump to gauge, unplug it and replug it a few times, or at least take the booster out of the equation.
