Just purchased 1979 f150 4x4. The previous owner said he had replaced the gray box on drivers fender a couple of times. He did not know why keeps going out. The truck started hauled it home. After 4 hour drive home, the truck started then died a couple of times then it would turn over a couple of times but not start. The transmission will not go into reverse and fluid looks like coffee with creamer added. I knew this when I bought it so that was no surprise. After finding neutral and letting it roll back off trailer we had to use another truck to push it in my driveway. Could there be a connection between tranny and duraspark box?
Congrats on the new truck! Now the adventure of figuring it out.
In terms of the Duraspark box and tranny there is no connection. The tranny does not use any kind of electronics in its operation. It is controlled by internal hydraulics, throttle position and vacuum.
Replacement Duraspark boxes are offered by AP stores and other vendors. Rock Auto also sells Motocraft brand boxes. General consensus is the generic replacement boxes are unreliable. The Motocraft box is best.
Coffee and creamer oil is usually caused by water. Was the truck maybe run in deep water? How does the engine oil look? Its best not to try to run anything until the fluids are checked/changed.
Oil is black and level is at full mark. Engine had week power pulling hills when I drove it originally. Reverse went out after the owner backed out of selling it. He said he thought water was in transmission. Anti freeze is 2 inches below cap and overflow jug has 2 inches of water in it. Thanks
