Need info on F450/550 4x4 C&C axles...
Hi All,
I'm normally in the OBS and IDI forums, but I need info from you guys...
I doing a 4x4 conversion on a '94 F-Superduty, and to solve several issues, I'm looking at using later axles from an F450/550 Cab & Chassis truck.
I want to stay with 16" wheels, need low gears (I love my current 5.13's), and I assume the rear axles provide a park brake.
I need to confirm if the newer SD C&C trucks have the same frame width as the OBS C&C trucks, and if the front axle is leaf sprung, with a driver's side, high pinion pumpkin.
Any info will be greatly appreciated!

What year of donor are you looking for? Anything remotely new 2005&up will use radius arms and coil springs, earlier should be leaf. All will be driver drop with high pinion. Not sure on the frame with or any of that. But the super 60 under them is a lot wider than a regular old 60, hence the flares on the 450/550s. Also not completely sure if 450/550 use 16 inch wheels and 99-04 are 8 lug and 05&up I believe are 10 lug. The rear axle will have the parking brake. It will be a dana s110 not a dana 80 or sterling. C&Cs usually have different frame width in the rear vs. a pickup. Best bet is find a donor and check it out.

Thanks for the reply. I'm trying to get this info to determine what year/model donor I need.
Doing searches I've found conflicting info on which ones had 16" wheels vs. 19.5, as well as what ratios were available.
The OBS trucks have 37" outside to outside frame widths, with the C&C trucks narrowing down by 3" right behind the cab. I've found conflicting info as well regarding frame widths on the newer trucks.
I guess I was hoping someone with a C&C F450 with 16" wheels was on this forum.

The 97 and older F-Superdutys (Ford never called the F450's, but that's what they are) have 10 lug 16 inch wheels. No emergency brakes on the rear axle. Emergency brake is a drum brake mounted on the back of the transmission. At least that's what the 2x4's had. 4x4's may have had a different emergency brake system. Those were a conversion done aftermarket, Quigley I thing was their name. Ford never offered 4x4 as an option for those trucks.

Yeah, I'm doing a 4x4 conversion on a '94 F-Superduty, and the parking brake is one of the issues. Quigley made a custom tailshaft housing for the back of the transfer case to mount the park brake, but they no longer have parts, and I've struck out trying to find one. Then there's the 10-lug hubs for a D60 issue, and the fact that I need to rebuild my rear axle. With all that, it seemed that changing to later SD axles would be a good alternative, but I don't want 19.5 wheels.
