Dipstick Differences

Am in need of a dipstick for '64 292, see that there are some for sale for 54 thru 60 Y blocks, am told that the length is OK, but the width is different compared with '64 What is the deal, are they thinner or wider? Anybody offer these? I need the dipstick, not the dipstick tube. Thanks

Both my 57 and 61 engines have the wide dip stick, I call them wide compared to the narrow sticks on my 66 mustang and my 66 FE. I had no idea they changed to the narrow one in the Y's. I think the wide stick would work if the tube diameter is large enough? I can give you a measurement of the wide one if that would help to compare to your tube diameter..

Well I did a fool thing and ordered one before I dug into this and discovered that, supposed to be here today. Let's see what that brings. I shoulda knowed there wouldn't be anything simple or straightforward about a '64 dipstick. The one in there now seems pretty wide as far as that goes. Whatever is unobtanium is the one needed, is how that goes.

Hm. Fits perfect, though the wrong length. Exactly 5 quarts oil in crankcase won't even register on dipstick.

Normally 5 quarts would read to "Full" mark on the old stick, although the manual does say "Add 1 quart" for filter change, or 6 quarts total.

To short won't work very well. I never understood add one quart with a filter change, with a new filter and 5 quarts mine always shows full on the stick..

I wonder if there is some other stick that would work, whether from a Mopar or stupidbaker or whatever. Or "cut to length".

I would take a piece of wire or similar and go down the tube until it hits the bottom of the pan and use that as a min measurement. A lot of the auto parts stores have after market chrome type sticks, maybe you can find one that is close and just cut it to length and make your own full mark,

I have a dip stick mystery of my own. All my parts trucks and most y blocks I see have the wide stick with larger diameter tube. My '58 has had the block replaced and I wonder if it may have a "car" dip stick and tube. Does anyone know if they are different? Mine is narrow, has a smaller diameter tube, and is longer than the wide ones I see. When I change the oil and add six quarts, it registers high on the stick. I have attributed the incorrect reading to the spin-on filter. I assume the old canister held more oil than the adapted spin-on and causes a bit higher level in the pan. Anyone experienced this?

all cars are the same.at least 3 dipsticks were made for trucks.you used to be able to buy a universal dipstick that you could adjust for any lenght.im sure someone still keeps them or just get any long one and mark it.

Y-Block trucks used quite a number of dipsticks and tubes. At this point, you can't really know which is installed.

A reproduction of a B9TE-6750-B is available. It looks like anything else will need to be found good used or NOS.

I have NOS B9TE-6750-B and one of the C1TZ-6750s. The C1TZ I have is a little longer than the B9TE.
The repro B9TE is very close to the NOS as far as the length and markings. Cosmetically, it is not quite the same, but that's what you can expect of repro parts.

There is also a reproduction of the T-Bird dipstick. Since those are also rear sump, that may be able to work but I don't know how long they are.

I will be using one of John Mummert's stainless dipstick tubes with all of these dipsticks to see which works best. I'll let you know the results, if I remember. Of course, if one of them works, it will only work with that tube or one of equal length.

Another thought, if you can determine how much longer the dipstick needs to be, you can always trim the tube to make it fit.

What's a good way to prevent metal chips from getting into the pan, assuming the dipstick tube is installed? I'm thinking maybe a rag stuffed inside the tube soaked in grease should work, then cut carefully around it.

Next, everything I read says Y block truck oil capacity is 6 quarts. Whenever I have done that, the stick reads way high. It does have a truck oil pan. Some say this discrepancy is because the older cartridge style filter held more than a canister type. I have the oil filter mod, I expect most people do.

So maybe I'll cut the tube down to show the correct level with 6 quarts on the new stick while I'm at it? This shouldn't pose any problems, even with a modern canister filter? That is, the oil pan has plenty of room and no foaming issues could result from this much "extra" oil could it?
