64 Side Mirrors

Wondering if anyone has a trick to stop the mirror from moving every time I close the door pass side. The mirror as it mounts on the base via a round ball, if you will, is loose and allows for the mirror to drop. As these are original to the truck, I didn't want to have to replace them.
So maybe once it is in place a little glue of some sort to hold it in place?
I don't use it much, but it is there and thus needs to be able to be useful.
Thanks,
Hammy

The round mirror held by the small ball end is loose.

If you remove the glass you will see the solution.

6T6merc...ok, cool, sounds logical. Is it glued in? Any idea to getting it out without damaging it.

There should be a flat steel ring, similar to a piston ring but thinner, at the edge of the glass. It sits flat on the glass; the edge of the steel ring sits in a groove in the mirror head. Use a sharp awl (or two) to compress the ring. When you compress the ring and close the end-gap the ring can be removed along with the glass.

6t6merc,
You have done this before...And I will attempt it tonight. Thanks so much for your direction on the how to! Maybe no more asking the wife to adjust it for me this year.

Well, I tried to compress that ring and no way to get the steel seal ring to compress.? SO I found it easier to add a little pressure to the mirror, there is little springs behind the glass, carefully press down and then used needle nose pliers to grab the seal ring, KEEPING pressure on the mirror at all times until you get the ring out, then slowly lift off the mirror to remove it. The springs behind the mirror allow you to separate the glass enough from the ring to pull it out. Put the mirror in a safe place! I say this, for I removed the mirror, set it on the bench, set the mirror base right on top of it, cracked the glass. NICE, original 64 mirror glass will now need a new replacement. BUT, I was able to tighten the mechanism so the mirror will not flop around!
