I'm having a little issue with shifting into first. Once in a while it simply will not go in, like you're pushing the shifter against a brick wall. If I turn off the truck and turn it back on, it works absolutely fine. I can shift into 2nd-5th no problem at all times. Is it just the shift linkage, or...? I'm not really sure where to start.
What kind of tools and set up do you have to inspect the clutch workings from the pad on the pedal to the clutch disc?
Ditto r & r the trans?
Not sure if there is an access panel in the floor of a Ranger. Pull your carpent back and see if there is a panel around the shifter. If so, shifter and shift fork repair can be done in the truck.
Post 5 worn part pics, post 27 a nutshell version of how-to. More vids are on line. Note this discussed the F150 version. They are very much the same trans, just "bigger" for the F150 version.
It may be easier to suggest what tools I'd need than me list everything I own :/. I've removed, rebuilt, and replaced the transmission in my 89 Cabriolet in the backyard, but I had a very extensive guide and just followed step by step.
I'm competent enough mechanic with a guide, but I'm not experienced enough to diagnose things or make judgment calls on repairs. That or not confident enough, haha. This is also my first truck (and first rear-wheel drive vehicle), so there's a bit to learn.
In any case, I have a lot of tools, and a good level place to put a vehicle up on stands. According to the service manual it could also be worn shift linkage. Before I go delving into the top of the transmission to check the forks, is there any guide on the linkage floating about? I can't seem to find one.
And of course, thank you for pointing me to that, I'm sure it'll be helpful as I'm not the kind of guy who's lucky enough to have easy $5 fixes, haha.
Bit of an update. I narrowed the issue down a bit.
If it gets to a point where I can't shift into 1st, I can shift into 3-5 or Reverse, travel just an inch or two in that gear, and then I can get into 1st again no problem.
you have encountered a bad master cyl or even a bad slave. Makes no difference both are a pia to change, the slave requires the trans to be pulled! Whatever, if ya change 1 be ready to change the other, dont ask how I know. Autozone sells both with lifetime guarantee, same for their clutch kits. Have taken advantage several times.
standard tools will handle the job, if ya pull trans change the clutch out while in there its easier. If not able check with independent shop for labor. Local guy charges $200 for the labor I supply the parts. They do it in a 1/2 day it takes me a couple in my spare time. Also good time to check U-joints since driveshaft will be out. also the carrier bearing.
