Just finished putting a new clutch in my 79 f150, 4x4.
I thought a clutch replacement would fix this problem, but has not.
A couple years ago this trans started acting funny. It doesn't grind or pop out of gear. From L-4 it's very draggy to shift. Not only running but also when the truck is off. Then reverse is just, not gone but like it never was there. The shifter wont even go into the reverse hole, it's like there's a block holding it out.
Stupid part is I can take the top cover off, reach down in there and just slide it into reverse.
I'm guessing the shift rods need pulled apart and shined up?
I'm at a total loss and need this thing driving so I can sell it, too many vehicles sitting around!!
IDK how you figured this was a clutch problem, and I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you will likely have to pull the trans. You can inspect the shifter itself, it pops out and up and check and lube it. Here is a manual on the NP435 (congrats, the best manual trans ever) for you to read up on the various parts and proper disassembly.
I have an NP435 in my garage, if you need me to take any pictures to compare to, lmk.

Reason: idiocy
I figured it was incomplete clutch release, but the clutch being absolutely shot is the reason it got replaced.
At 65 you could not accelerate, rpm would gain and mph would decrease.
I did find this morning the roll pin that holds the pivot ball on the shifter is missing and let's the pivot "ball" spin on its boring shaft.
All nylon "feet" are on the forks.
gears slide in and out with one finger when the shift tower is off.
That roll pin breaks sometimes leaving you with a "delicate" shifting touch from 2nd to 3rd. The little nubbie that does the work (7D282) in shifting gets turned around and won't shift as easily 'cause the roll pin is broken in the shaft.
You need to punch it out and put a new roll pin (305084-S) in there........an easy fix.
Sure a picture would be great! The shifting in my 78 f250 np435 is sometimes a little difficult. Probably because it's been sitting for 20 plus years. I've seen how people take out the shifter. Wasn't sure what the roll pin does.
Edit: Now that I'm looking at the diagram closer i have a better idea of what you're talking about. Thanks!
