I have the mazda 5 speed in my truck and iv been having more and more problems with it lately and was wandering if yall could help.
The truck has always pop'ed ouit of 3rd for the 3 years iv had it and more recently its been almost always grinding into first like it doesn't have any syncros. And it has pop'ed one of the metal plugs out of the front of the top of the tranny. When i pulled the top to replace the plug i inspected the forks and both forks are worn (i have pictures if that would help).
do yall think that worn forks would cause this problem or any other ideas? and i have found them on ebay, but does anyone know where else to get them?
Thats what it thought, but when i took the top off and inspected it, the syncros looked fine, They none of then looked warn at all. I have pictures of those too.
An old boy told me one time that these trannies are prone to wear more than a normal one, and most of us us the gearshift as an armrest, especially between shifts. He said that this put pressure on the shift fork, causing it to wear prematurely.
Hey guys, sorry its taken so long for me to get back. Iv been busy with the end of school
Thanks for the info,
and i have no doubt that the shifter was used as an arm rest especially in 2nd and 4th. Iv even caught myself doing it a few times. the truck is a daily driver and it has no center console or arm rest so it makes sense that the previous owner probably did the same.
Its happens mostly when shifting and you just rest your arm until the next shift.
Does anyone know where i can get a good manual or have any tips on doing it?
Thanks for the info, i plan on going into it this weekend if i can get the parts.
Oh, and do yall think that this will fix the problems, or am i going to be looking at more trouble in the future? And how do the syncros look? Worn or OK? Is there anything in particular i need to look for when i have it apart?
I recommend getting a SY unit, Or have that one rebuilt.
If you really really can't afford it at this time, You can find a top off another transmission and put it on, Or buy new forks, forks are ~$50 each.
IT WILL NOT LAST! The worn sliders will chew up the forks again sooner or later!
I've seen them last days and years doing this. It's a gamble!
Also if you do this ensure you flush it out real good!
Well i really cant afford a new trans right now, but my hope is to get a zf at the end of the summer.
it just has to get me through a summer of work. Ill try the new forks and hopefully they will last. $100 for new forks right now is better then the 6 or 7 hundred ill spend on a tranny or more if i want the zf, which i do. But at the end of the summer ill have plenty to do the swap.
Thank you all for the help. Please continue to give any tips or ideas that will help me out. Im pretty good with mechanics and im sure id figure it out, but its always nice to know of the tips and tricks before hand.
Uh....y'all can't buy them for that price, at least not from Ford you can't.
The dealers pay more than that $50.00 figure for two of them.
