Starter Issues
While up at the cottage last weekend the temp got down to -42 F for a few nights. I fully expected this so I brought up the generator to run the block heater before leaving. The day before going I dropped off a friend at the parking lot and thought I would look at my Ex and I noticed that the trailer brake control light was still on. I thought Crap!! here we go so I thought I would try to see if it would start. The temp had climbed to plus 10. I cycled the glow plugs twice and just a lonely click and nothing. I then fired up the generator for the block heater and plugged a 12 amp battery charger in. Four hours later still a click.
My starter was rebuilt about one year ago. I then took the old starter off and tried it in the cottage with a set of booster cables and it would engage the gear out but it would not turn.
Was this from me trying to start the motor on low batteries? I thought that most times a starter would give a little advanced warning.
Is there something I should be doing in advance to prevent changing a starter in the snow and dark? Unfortunately my rebuilt starter does not crank over a fast as my old one.
Thanks,
Rob
One click is usually the sound of death on a starter solenoid. Multiple clicks is a bad battery. Wear warm clothes and maybe a cardboard box to lay on.

It's probably true for all vehicles. If the starter can't turn the motor fast enough, it won't start. If that wasn't true I'd think the motor would be commanded to fire on the first revolution and we run a starter until it just won't spin anymore.

Thanks for the quick response. I never knew that the 6.4 starter was the same bolt pattern as the 6.0. I do know that diesels need speed to start.
I already replaced mine in the parking lot last Tuesday and froze my a$$ off!! Worst was the rebuilt starter has acted up twice this week. Luckily I talked to the shop I purchased it from and they will refund it. I then talked to a buddy at work and his Dad is getting me a 6.4 starter for about 2/3rds of the cost of the 6.0 starter.
I will report back once I replace this one next week if it spins better/faster.
I think I may have froze my batteries last week when they were drained as well as my Ex would not start today in the parking lot at work and they are only two years old. The temperature today was 46 F. Before I went to the cottage I did a load test on them and they checked out fine. Strange.
Maybe I have a phantom load that is drawing my batteries down as well. This is very frustrating!!
