Just found out my dad got a screaming deal for a 460 for my 71 F250 4wd. It currently has a 360, that runs pretty good, from what I've been told. (I haven't even seen it in person yet, as I bought it while deployed.) Anyhow, What does it take to convert from the 360 over to the 460? Bellhousing? Clutch? Mounts? I can easily handle the conversion, given my background, but any advice and knowledge from people who've done it before is always helpful. Thanks.
I once was considering this. Replace C6 with 429/460 C6. I know my bellhousing isn't removable. Adjust tranny crossmember as required. May have to adjust driveshaft length. Pan should clear front crossmember but not sure.
If you are retaining the 4 speed you will need a 351M-400 bellhousing and spacer plate. The 360-390 flywheel will work but it is best to find one from a HD 390. Make sure the 460 starter has the same teeth as the 360, if not put the 360-390 starter drive on to match the tooth count on the flywheel. Double check all the clearances, one subscriber said he had to run 3 spacer plates to keep the input shaft from bottoming out or something. And if the flywheel has been resurfaced a couple times you may need a longer adjusting rod.
I'm not sure. Are early 460's internally balanced like a 360/390. I know that 79 and later 460's are externally balnced. I think you need a 460 flywheel, to use a 460. The 351/400M have the same bellhousing pattern as a 460.
The 79 and later 460's were externally balanced and require the correct flywheel. Motor mounts and mounting towers I believe used on 73-79 trucks will work, but I am 100% sure. There is a set on ebay.
Okay, I do want to retain the factory 4 speed, so I need the 351M bellhousing, 460 flywheel and starter, and 460 mounts. Where do I get the spacer plates? Also, what clutch would I use with this? Does anybody make a kit to help simplify this swap?
I don't know of a kit, but there may be something. The spacer is what is between the engine block and the bellehousing. I have seen guys get by without one on other aplications by using just the starter spacer that you get off the HELP rack at the parts store. You can modify or make engine towers if you can weld. And if you get the older 460 you can use a 360-390 fly wheel. The clutch should be whatever the flywheel came from. The t/o bearing for the 351 should work if the clutch used is the same style used on the 351. Like a diaphram or Borg and Beck style.
