I am rebuilding my 1969 and it has a 360 in it. I do have a stock 460 in my 1979 that I could put in or I could sell the 79 and use the money from that to dump into my 360 engine and some other misc stuff on my 69 build. Is the 360 worth trying to build up or should I just go with my 460? I am trying to build on a budget so any ideas would help. ALso if I decide to go with the 460 swap how hard is it to put in and what do I need to do?
The 360 is from the FE series of engines 332, 352, 360, 490, 406, 410, 427, and 428. They are in a way like the SBC it that there all the same external dimension so accessories can be swapped around, but its what on the insides that count.
The 460 is from the 385 family 429, and 460. They do share motor mounts and transmission with part of the 335 series or Modified subsection.
The 360 can be a good motor for most people, and has enough power to get you where you wanna go. If you wanna compete with a 460 you will need to step up to a 390, but the way they deliver power will be a bit different. The 390 is a long stroke torque monster, and the 460 is a shorter stroke power house.
I have a 352, and I feel it is just fine for what I do. Especially more so when I put headers, and a good exhaust under it.
What do you wanna do with your truck? That way they can comment on your stated wants.

.
Uh, how do you figure that?
390: 4.05 x 3.784
460: 4.36 x 3.85
The 460 will require more fiddling to install in your truck. The 360 can be made into a 390, 410 or larger with different cranks and other parts, depending on what you want to do and how much money you want to spend.
As for a 390 vs 460, if you build them the same, the 460 will make more power at lower rpms than the 390. If you build them to produce the same power, the 390 will make it at higher rpms.

While the 460 is obviouly bigger you can increase the stroke of a smaller motor to make it work about as hard as a larger motor.
5.4, 400M, 390FE, 410FE, 300 I6, all use long strokes to make the motor feel larger at low speeds.
While similar in terms of cubic inches which would you rather tow with a 300 I6 or a 302?
I'm facing the same debate. It's coming down to money for me. I'm looking at a 72 F250 with a 390 as a doner truck for my 70 F350. My F350 has a 360 in it now that's warn out but still makes plenty of power. I have come to really like the FE. I have a 72 460 drag car motor with 10 miles on it sitting in my shop. It had a bent pushrod from over revving. It was pulled from the car and never touched since. I paid $250 for it from a guy I know who really needed the cash.
To put the rebuild the 460 and do the swap I'll need mounts, intake, carb, headers, accessories and a driveline to put behind it. For about $3,000!
If I get that F250 that has a good running 390 I can do some head work and swap all my 360 go fast parts and be done for under a grand.
I think I'm going to go with the 390. Make a little less power but get better mpg's and a way easyer swap. Pluss I get a good 4spd trans with longer ratios than my toploader I have now. I don't need 1st unless I'm loaded.
I am not looking to tow anything large but wouldnt mind feeling my truck pull me back in the seat a little bit when I wanna stomp on the throttle. Will the 360 make the cut?
The 360 will make the power if you do it right. If your bottom end is good don't mess with it. If you want even beter power get a 390 bottom end. Power is made in the cam and top end. Save the money you would spend on the 460 swap and put it into an intake, carb, headers and a good towing cam. If you do anything to the bottom end I would just make shure you have a new oil pump and your pan and rotating assembly are good and clean befor putting a new cam in there because the first 100 miles are important to a cam. If your pumping dirt around you will score the cam for life.
A 460 swap is expensive to do pluss it's worse on gas.
