So I have had my SCT tuner for about 5 years. It has Gearhead tunes on it. My truck was bought new and has never run anything but stock with the exception of a trial of the tunes just to see if it really made a difference. I got the tuner to turn my cel off due to egr delete. Yea, it makes a difference alright.
Ive always run stock because I tow and I'm real conservative about that with my truck and plan on having it a lonnnnnng time. My question is about the computer and switching all that program stuff back and forth. Now that those who have run programs and who have switched back and forth from stock to whatever and then back again, does it increase the chances of having any problems other than the mechanical issues that have been addressed for years?
I switch numerous times a year. I run Matt's 8K tow tune as my daily driver. When I tow, I use the Unlimited tow tune. When I get tested, I return to stock. When I get done towing for the weekend, I return to 8K again.
well there ya go. No doubt my paranoia is unfounded because amdriven, you are doing what I certainly have the capability of doing but have been unsure about the reliability of doing such to the engine and it not fouling something up. That's why I asked. I always appreciate the forum. Thanks
I talked to sct today, and they said that they recommend that you put the stock tune on the truck when switching from one tune to another. Not really sure if it's totally necessary, maybe others can chime in but that's just what they told me.
It sounds like they don't trust their product to retain the stock tune.
Wether it's from operator error at the OBDII plug or yanking on it out by the cord potentially corruption during the transfer. It's good advice. All they see are SCT's and they have all kinds of customers.
I wouldn't think twice about flashing back to stock if updating the tuner, plugging that into my laptop, never know what will happen. I do go from tune to tune without going back to stock first, jumping from tow to performance.
I used to change from tune to tune without returning to stock. That is, until I had a long start issue one day just after changing the tune the day before. I had thought I was in for a costly repair and stressed for a few day. Then, on a whim, I recalled that I had changed the tune just before the problem started so I changed back to stock, then back to the desired tune and the long start problem went away. I think there may have been remnant data that corrupted the tune or something. Anyway, I have since decided to go back to stock before changing tunes. Just part of the process for me now.
