82 351w Vacuum - starting from scratch
I have zero idea of what I need to do vacuum wise. None. I looked at the diagrams in the Chilton, but I might as well have been reading greek.
Can anyone tell me what all I need to have hooked up? Or point me in the general direction?
As an aside, I have an electric fan. Any ideas where I can hook the temp sensor for that up? The threaded hole in the thermostat housing is being used for the gauge temp sensor. Can I use the hole directly behind the thermostat housing on the intake? There is also another threaded hole on the intake on the driver's side of the distributer. What is that for?
I would not use a threaded hole on the thermostat housing, that would be above the thermostat and would not get flow until it opened. That other threaded hole in the intake may work if it has water in it.
If you have a automatic and it's not a AOD you need a vacuum line for that.
You need a vacuum line for your HVAC controls.
You need a vacuum line for your cruise if you have cruise.
You need a vacuum line for your brake booster.
You need a vacuum line for your distributor
You need a vacuum line for your PCV valve
You need a vacuum line for your air cleaner if you are using the original one.
You need a vacuum line going to your charcoal canister.
You are correct that the threaded hole in the housing is above the t stat, but if I use that for the fan, it would allow the motor to get to operating temp before the fan kicked on. I am pretty certain that the intake has two other threaded holes that go to water so I can use one of those for the gauge.
Thanks for all the vacuum info. Does it
Matter where each of those go?
All those vacuum lines are full manifold vacuum except the PCV and the distributor vacuum. The distributor vacuum needs to go to a port on the carb that does not have vacuum at idle, but has vacuum when the throttle is opened.
The PCV valve will go in one of the valve covers, and the other end needs to go to a port made for it on the carb, or on a spacer underneath the carb. The gases from the PCV need to be distributed evenly to all the cylinders. Look in your edelbrock carb book, I think your carb has a certain port already for the PCV valve.
