96 F250 questions

Hey y'all have the opportunity to possibly buy a 96 F250 XL work package, all manual, with the 351w in it, it has 277k miles.

The list of new parts is:
Clutch disk, pressure plate, throw out bearing, slave cylinder, pilot bearing, clutch line, clutch reservoir. Heater core, plugs, wires, u joints in front drive shaft, cold air intake, block heater, 2-1/2 inch dual exhaust to the back of the cab with 28" long glass packs, aftermarket radio, always ran havoline 10-40 through it.

This is what he says.

I need input as to what y'all think if this is a truck that will be good for me or will it leave me stranded with this many miles? Also it's virtually rust free, came from Alaska, has a block heater installed too.

What y'all think?

You never know with that many miles. It could be running great and blow up out of nowhere(not real likely though).Or if it's been maintained good and oil changes done on time you might get another 50k miles.Listen to the motor very closely, maybe see if you can pull a valve cover and see how much build up there is.What's he asking for it,I wouldn't buy it unless very cheap with that many miles though.

With those kind of miles on a STRIPPED GAS truck I wouldn't pay more than 2k

i agree with both of brads comments ... but high mileage has never scared me ... abuse/neglect scares me. i have had higher mileage vehicles than that and they served me fine as a daily driver. any used vehicle is a breakdown waiting to happen, i suppose. a good understanding of your vehicle, along with an auto club membership goes a long way.

if it starts readily, idles fine, drives without issue, decent rubber, etc., etc., etc. then the only issue is price.

how much ?

If it was a 7.3 with that many miles I'd buy it. As a gas motor 200K is pushing the envelope. If you buy it just keep in mind it might need a motor sooner than later. The cost of the truck would be my decision maker. How's the body? Interior?

Thanks guys.

I'm trading even up with my 91 7.3 IDI. Before you go crazy, my 7.3 needs a lot of work and money into repairs, and has awful body rust. The 96 he has, the body is in superb shape, and has had very little hard use since he's owned it, and he's put a lot of new parts in it. Needs a carrier bearing soon because it's starting to vibrate a little, and only one larger spot of rust on the door is the main problems. My 7.3, it'll break my bank before I can really appreciate it. Broke down on me Tuesday actually. Universal in the rear broke and my driveshaft fell out, clattering all over the road. There's just stuff like that all over the place. So I'm going to see this truck on Saturday, hopefully it's nice and the guy does do an even trade with me. What are the things I need to look at while inspecting? (I've done this many times, just asking opinions as I view y'all as the 'professionals')

This is true for MOST gas engines. the 7.5l 460 is low RPM similar to a diesel and last a long time. Similar with the 4.9l I6.

I guess I'd keep the old truck in the back of my mind and look for the same stuff on the 96.
Why is this guy trading even for yours in rough shape and his in good shape? Be ware!

From his words, he needs a diesel for the pulling power as he has a 5th wheel car hauler. And he's been looking for one like this for a while now.

I wouldn't say 200k is pushing it on a gas motor. Maybe on some carb'd job that washed the cylinders down and had a 3-speed auto behind it screaming on the highway. I used to think 200k was a lot, until my car hit 200k, and then everyone I know had cars with over 200k on it, including one with over 300k, and they all run just fine.

If the engine runs fine, doesn't consume oil, and doesn't make any weird noises, I'd say go for it.
