Hey folks. Some of you may have seen me hanging around here some, but I've been spending my time out in the 6.4 section.
Anyhow, I'm looking at purchasing a 2006 F-250 super cab short box 6.0L. It has 328K km on it and needs some engine work. I'm okay with that.
The thing I'm wondering about, how easy or difficult is it to change it from manual door locks to power, manual windows to power windows, to swap out the manual fan control to automatic climate control and so on.
I have a 2003 parts truck sitting out back so the window motors and such I have, as well as door lock actuators. The climate control wouldn't be a deal breaker I guess...
I'm really looking for a Lariat, but if this one can be made 'okay' without too much hassle I would consider it!
You would need to have more information about the xl. Does it have power harnesses ran to the doors already just sitting inside the door? If it's just switching out the regulators and changing the door panels, that's pretty easy. But if the doors aren't prewired, it's going to be a little more work.
There is quite a bit of difference going from the xl to the xlt. The work seats, rubber floors, manual locks and windows, steel wheels, grey painted bumpers and grilles. There is much less difference going from xlt to lariat, basically just the leather seats and wood panels.
I think the sweet spot is getting an xlt and updating the radio to a modern touch screen hands free thing and you have everything a new one has.
I think that transplanting the components is not going to be the problem but getting power to them will. Question is does the XL wire harness have connections for the new components? I personally would either take the XL as it is or look for an XLT, Lariat or King Ranch instead.
My first guess would be no, they don't have any power in them at all. Look for signs of power in the doors. Does it have lighted mirrors, interior door lights? You could also open the door and pull the boot out of the jam and see if it has anything in it.
Also keep in mind you need to tell the PCM that you have added something.
The door locks are tied into the VSM and that is tied into the PCM.
More than likely you will need to add a VSM and program it and the PCM.
The only reason you'd have to re-program anything is if you want the automatic door locks to work when you hit 20mph. Otherwise, just wire the locks windows and mirrors to switched power in the fuse box. If the mirrors have defrost capability, that'll have to be addressed, and you may have to run crossover wires for the passenger side mirror to the switch on the driver side.

I don't know what years are the same but the 2003 I had power locks without remote keyless entry. It has a reversing polarity style of lock while the ones with RKE have electric pulse to either the lock or unlock wire. The two style will not work together and the wireing the control is diffrrent. I don't think it will be as simple as you think unless all the wireing is changed from a done truck
The upper level body trim packages most times will have the added wires Vs the
base model that does not have a lot. You may find that the one your looking at might
have a plug for the operation you looking for but is missing the final section of wire
that you should be a le tp pick up at an auto wrecking yard for a lot less than a new
part if you want to add things later on in the ownership of a truck.
Also if you let me know I can post diagrams in a thread for you in PDF format from
the DVD workbooks I have access to.
