Truck bogging down 212 code

I have a 1997 F250 4x4 with a 460 and 5 speed. The truck runs great cold, but once it's warmed up it will begin to bog down and backfire driving down the road (idles fine). Then out of nowhere, will clear up and take off like a bat out of hell. But as soon as I decelerate, it will bog down again. Check engine light reads a 212 code which is spout signal loss. Sound familiar to anyone? This thing is my daily driver. I need help ASAP!

Edit: I should mention that the truck does this randomly. Drove into town from work today with no issue. Stopped by the auto parts store, then drive to my mechanic up the street with no issue. Then headed off to the gas station and it began missing and back firing. I got gas and when I started it up to drive home it was still doing it. I parked at my house for about an hour, then got in my truck and drove to my girlfriend's house with zero issues. Why does the truck only do it sometimes?

You might try unplugging the spout and plugging it back in. Maybe just a poor connection.

Thanks. I'll try that. The truck already has a new pick-up coil, distributor and cap, and all new spark plugs. What would you try if unplugging the spout and plugging it back in doesn't work?

Kyler,
I'm afraid I can't be of any help going forward.... when they quit putting carbs on the engines they left me in the dust. Hang in there tho as someone with more knowledge than me will be around with some help. Good luck with it!!

The spout is the little plug coming off of the ICM, correct?

It will be a little square plastic plug some where in the area of the icm. Either by the distributor or on the left fender near the firewall. Some v6's are on the intake with the icm being mounted next to the radiator

Okay. Found the spout. It was on the driver side inner fender like you said. And guess what? There was nothing plugged into it. So now my question is this: do I attempt to track down another spout plug (it's basically just a fuse, right?)? Or do I try to find another way around the problem? Because I've heard horror stories of trucks running like garbage when the spout IS plugged in. Could that perhaps be why the previous owner removed it?

Also, my understanding of the SPOUT is that it essentially "locks" the timing once it's been set. Is that correct? If so, that would explain why my truck will run great for a few days after messing with the distributor, then suddenly begin running poorly.

PS: Thank you in advance for your replies! Any and all help is greatly appreciated!!

With the spout out set the timing to 10 degrees. when you insert the spout it allows the pcm to set / move timing as needed. The spout connector is just a jumper. I havent tried this but a mini fuse might just plug into the socket on the harness. go to a salvage yard you can probably pick one up pretty cheap. most any Ford 97 or earlier with a distributor will work.

I've heard of putting a toggle switch in its place. Could that work?

If it would run worse with it unplugged, then you have another problem that needs fixing. Make a jumper yourself or spend a few bucks at a junkyard. Running the truck without the spout will throw off the timing advance, and could likely be a cause of your issue.

I got a 25 amp micro fuse that fit in it nicely. It still did the same thing, but I'll unplug it tomorrow and play with the timing then plug it back in. *fingers crossed*

The fuse should be fine as long as it maintains solid contact. If you set the timing in that order, you will be just fine.
