That is pretty significant.
More like 9-11mpg city and 12-15mpg highway for normal people. That extra you pay up front for a diesel sure buys a lot of gas....just sayin, well that along with nearly instant heat in the winter and not really having to worry about anything engine wise.

I know! Budgeting is set for saving up towards a house right now. Hoping to make the drag strip this Friday again and actually get a few runs in for fun just to see what it'll do. Other than a new HPOP and possibly a return fuel system I'm done with go fast mod's on this one.

The fiancé loves the full size Bronco's (her first vehicle) and wants something bigger than her current craptastic Cruze. I may forgo the Excursion and pick up a Bronco with and a wrecked 6.0 X then swap interior and drivetrain to the Bronco for fun. A modified 6.0 with about half the weight? Yes.

I'm biased towards the V-10 myself as that's what I run and I work mine pretty hard as it is our dedicated tow rig for an 11,000lb TT that we drag all over the East and then some.
You don't mention what kind of distances your daily use would be, short trips are tough on any engine but a gasser will heat up faster than an oil burner so not only do you get interior heat but they cook off any internal engine moisture faster.
The V-10, even with the more common 3.73 gears will have plenty of power to drag a sled trailer for you.
Diesel maintenance costs are higher than a gasser, more oil, more filters and the rear tires last longer on a gas rig.
Finding good honest real fuel mileage from an online community can be a challenge sometimes, but I think this place is a little better than most for that. My V-10 in stock trim used to get real 14 to 15.5 MPG on unloaded highway trips (based on tank averages), now with the 4" lift, 35"s, 4.88 gears, headers and custom tunes it gets 13 highway at 65 MPH. Towing our 11k TT it gets between 8 and 9.25 MPG.
Yes, some of the Power Strokes do pull down mileage up to and over 20 MPG on the highway but from what I've read here I don't think that is the average. I think expectations in the mid high teens (17 to 19) would be more realistic for the average PSD rig and driver on the highway. Towing the sled trailer would drop that a couple of MPGs but not much. So yes the diesels do get better mileage but it isn't as huge of a difference between the two as some would make it out to be. Not what I would call a "killer".
20k is most definitely on the high side for a gas rig, but you are saying that it is near mint and very low miles sooooo.......

You didn't mention if you were looking for 2WD or 4X4. Guessing by the prices you're seeing 4X4. Seems like those lower mileage ones are hard to come by especially in mint, mint, mint Seems a bit overpriced but also a later model than mine. Picked up a 2001 V10 4X4 CA truck with 100k miles for $13K couple months ago.
i know right, the Akex had me going down to buy a ex in a day! geez loiuse!

Doesn't have to be a huge project really. Find one with a good body and no major engine problems for less than $10k. Then take it to a diesel shop and have them do head studs, egr delete, oil cooler, intake, exhaust, and tune and maybe a few other small things that need done. Shouldn't spend more than 2 weeks in the shop, also to any cosmetic things you want....tint, mirrors, 05 front end, etc. You will be on the road in a very solid, nice looking Ex under $20k.
