Need advice on 1st Excursion...

Hi everyone,

I am in the market for my 1st Excursion and am looking for some insight from the members here. Basically, I've narrowed my search down to these three vehicles (although they don't have very much in common):

2000 Limited 4X2 w/ 7.3 Diesel - 160,000 miles (being offered to me for $6750 since the company I work for currently owns it)

2004 Limited 4X4 w/ 6.0 Diesel - 115,000 miles and priced at $21,500

2005 Limited 4X4 w/ V10 - 50,000 miles and priced at $21,000

Now I know that on the surface that each of these trucks appear quite different from each other, but I have my reasons for considering each. The 2000 is the best deal (it's in good condition, just a tad rough but nothing major that I know of) In fact, I just drove it back and forth from Kansas to Arkansas last week pulling a 1,000 lb. trailer and golf cart and it averaged 16 MPG over the 800 miles. The 2004 is a one-owner and in great condition, and the 2005 is a low-mile example and also seems like a good deal.

I should also mention that the heaviest towing we'll do is a 2 horse trailer which shouldn't be over 5,000 lbs fully loaded. This will also be a vaction vehicle (NOT DRIVEN DAILY) and will most likely see less than 5,000 miles a year.

I'm basically aware of the pros and cons of gas vs. diesel and such, but I'm still stuck at a crossroads and really need some advice.

Thanks guys.

I own a 6.0 and as much as I love mine I would never take the risk of buying one with 115K miles. To many things can go wrong, especially if the previous owner beat on the truck and or did not take care of it!

The 05 V-10 is a rip off! You can buy low mileage 04's and 05 6.0's for $21K!!

The 7.3 is a decent deal, nice and cheap and if the truck is in good shape the $15K you will save can buy a lot of cool stuff or repairs if needed!!!

If a diesel is a must I'd keep looking, you will find a low mileage 6.0 for a good price if you look and be patient!!
Here's a sweet deal if you want to go to Florida!!!

With the limited amount of miles you'll be driving, I'd suggest the V10. The two diesel motors aren't meant to sit, they're meant to work and work daily. The V10 is good for short trips and doesn't mind sitting.

Don't listen to him because he must be heavy-footed. I get over 10MPG city & around 15 MPG highway with my V10 '05 4WD. Unless you plan to keep the truck until it has 250K miles on it, go with the '05 V10. I bought mine 2 years ago with 42K miles for $26K.
