Replacement Alternator

1986 F-250 4x4, 460 has A/C I don't know if it's factory air or dealer installed air or if that even makes a difference.

My alternator has had a bad bearing for some time and today it locked up and threw the belt off.

I'm in the market for a replacement alternator and I cannot find a replacement like the one I took off.

Replacements I've found when searching have a different clocking position and I'm unsure if they will work. I don't hardly have the time to replace the alternator not to mention get the wrong one and have to do it twice. I'd rather get an alternator just like I took off just so I know it will work.

It also looks like I may be pulling the damn pulley off as most replacements I've seen with the plug in style terminals have the v belt style pulley. I'd really like to get away from this if it all possible. I figured replacing an alternator would be straight forward but I guess not.

Here is the alternator I removed.

Ok, I got the pulley off. I was expecting it to be a little more like replacing the power steering pump pulley. As long as the pulley on the replacement alternator will be similar in difficulty to remove I will be set.

I found a Duralast sticker on the alternator saying DL7745. I found it on Autozone's website however it doesn't come up when searching the specific criteria only when searching for the specific part number.

I think I have it figured out. Seems to be an Autozone thing or something similar that confused me on finding a replacement.

See if you have someone in your area that rebuilds them. Might be cheaper and you will have the same alternator.

You can rebuild starters and alternators yourself and avoid having to play "roulette" with some of the parts house rebuild units. They aren't too happy about defective units either because crappy parts clog up their supply chain I'd imagine. Maybe $25 for a kit?

Look yours up here: http://www.alternatorstarterrebuildkits.com

edit: by letting yours go till it seized up, maybe it's not rebuildable, I dunno. You say you don't have time for this, but now it kinda has to be fixed right away! I didn't see anything going back that far, but I bet if you wrote them they'd be able to recommend something. As far as the clock, it's not a big deal to swap things around to make them work, I'm sure they could help. Failing that a junkyard would be a good bet.

You couldn't pay me enough to put a 2G back in my truck, but I don't see why you have a hard time locating a replacement.
Every one of my LAP has them in stock.

Just ask for:

I have rebuilt starters and alternators in the past. More starters than alternators but both with success. I should probably source such services in this area as the starter sounds as though it could use a once over. I'd do it but I'm short on time.

Your right. Take the alternator that just went out for instance. Duralast. I don't like going the Duralast route and if I had more time I would opt for something else.

I doubt it's rebuildable honestly. But that's Autzones problem now.

I think it was just Autzones website. The guy said something at the counter about it referencing correctly to the truck but that it did so weirdly.

I went ahead and purchased some parts tonight from Autozone. The alternator, belt, radiator and radiator cap. I got the pulley's changed over. Wasn't too bad.

Hopefully the alternator works. It's just strange how all of them looked different than mine. I noticed mine pulled up 86-94.

ISSUE:When a generator fails, there are a few failure modes that may cause heat to be produced at the wiring harness-to-generator connector. This excess heat may damage the female terminals on the wiring harness, resulting in increased resistance.
The increased resistance produces more heat. When the generator is replaced, the resistance produced by a damaged connector may damage the new generator and could result in a repeat repair, including installation of another generator.
High resistance (caused by a damaged connector) will not go away until the damaged connector is replaced.

ACTION:Visually inspect the harness-to-generator connector for damage (heat, corrosion, distortion and cracking) before installing a new generator.
Install the Generator Wiring Harness Connector Kit (E5AZ-14305-AA) if the harness-to-generator connector is damaged.
The Generator Wiring Harness Connector Kit (E5AZ-14305-AA) contains the following:^ One (1) Red Wire Butt Connector^ Two (2) Yellow Wire Butt Connectors^ One (1) Wire Connector Assembly^ One (1) Instruction Sheet (I.S. 6849)

Because,
Actually I was unaware of this completely. Thanks so much for bringing this to my attention. I didn't replace the pigtail as I was unaware of the potential issue of course. But I will be soon. I did happen to check it out briefly and it didn't look too bad, contacts looked clean and nothing looked broken. Still yet I will purchase a pigtail and replace it when it warms up.
