E4OD to ZF5 questions

I believe my auto is beginning to go out after 235k miles and i am wanting to put a zf5 in it.

questions are what all do i exactly need? it is a 1991 f250 2wd w/o a turbo.

i am also wondering if anyone has done a zf5 to erode swap that may have parts i could get from.

how hard is the switch?

i don't want to have a shop bend me over and i am pretty mechanically inclined but this would be my biggest project yet. i would have help.

all help and tips appreciated..thank you all.

Some of the quirks of putting a ZF into a 80-86 body style do not apply in your case, but read my long post #5 in this thread:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...a-6-9-idi.html

Edit: since you are 2wd you may need a different drive shaft. I don't know if those transmissions are equal length like C6 and ZF 4x4 models.

The big ones are Clutch/flywheel, Mounts/Members, Wiring/Computers, (because you had an e4od) driveshaft, and Pedals. and oh also good luck finding a cheap 2 wheel drive zf5. but yeah, its exactly what i did on my truck, but the opposite because the previous owner on mine drove like a turd.

Why would he need a computer? The ZF isn't computer controlled, and neither is an IDI engine. Take the E4OD computer and wiring and sell them.

yup, no computer or wiring needed.
you can either leave it in the truck abandoned, or remove it and sell it.

More questions for y'all..

Will the bell housing be the same or will I have to mess with it?

The pedals.. Do they have to come off of another diesel or can they come off of an 87-91 gasser? (F150,250,350??)

Also I was reading up about the brake and reverse lights will need some rigging??

Thank y'all so much

trans will have to come from a diesel 2 wheel drive. gas and diesel transmissions have different bolt patterns.
pedal assembly will have to come from a 87 to 91 Bronco, F-150, F-250, or F-350. gas or diesel boes not matter for the pedal assembly.

You can also use a zf5 from behind a 460, but you need to drill
some of the holes in the bell housing. They have lower 1st and reverse
ratio.

Another option, although more expensive is to get a 4x4 trans and
transfer case. This would give you low range if you ever do any
really heavy low speed stuff. For example, I have a 14k lb traier I tow
sometimes. Backing up a hill loaded down its nice to have low range.
Even unloaded its nice because idling in reverse is too fast in tight
quarters.

If I get a 2wd zf5 from a diesel the bell housing will match?

not bad. the biggest pain in the butt is mounting the pedal assembly and clutch master cylinder, and getting the hydraulic clutch bled and working

get the drive shaft, and all associated parts needed to do the swap out of the truck the trans came from is what i used to do when doing swaps like that.
