Conelrad?

Looking at the radio in my '59 got me thinking about the old "CONELRAD" stations, which were marked with the little triangles at 640 and 1240 kc.
As a kid, I remember them on all AM radios.
Does anyone know what the name "CONELRAD" stood for? And does anyone remember if these stations ever used for anything other than a national emergency?
I can't remember when they disappeared, but I think it was before the end of the cold war. Does anyone know why?
I was wondering for my own curiosity, but I'd also like to know because the kids were asking me, and I'd have a chance to look smart.

It would only be a guess on my part but those are the two frequencies that the martians used to send their instructions to GEORGE relative to their secret plan to invade the world.
BWAH, HA, HA,HA
I did a search using "Conelrad radios" and came up with this, among others www.ccrane.com/news/whatsinthenews8.26.02.htm
Go check it out and be the "gee, dad knows everything" to the kids!

Thanks for that great link! I remember CONELRAD as a kid, but I always had those burning questions about it. I never thought to do a search.

George 'ol buddy,
You'd spare a fellow "stocker" without big fenders, wouldn't you?
I don't know.
I'm only guessing here, but it could be................1.) Your highly advanced mathematical skills.
2.) Your knowledge of engineering formulas that could possibly build a spacecraft.
3.) You know big words that appear to be not of this world.
Just kidding with you George.
This post is actually meant to be a compliment in disguise.
