This is true,i t depends what the OP means by Main bolt. If he is talking about the sprocket bolts then yes I would go with the arp or ford one if they can be found. I assumed by the wording he was talking about the cam cap bolts.
You know, you're right, I never looked at it that way - and probably very easy to bend one if you have the cams out.
I remember seeing ARP cam journal studs somewhere...
i have been still looking for a bolt. I know the bolt is stamped 9.8 on the head. All i can do is see if anyone has a broken 2v head 4.6 or 5.4. the length i'm not worried about.
Since I'll have @600-1000hp with it been supercharged with manely pistons & rods and had using head studs. Want to make everything work. Cause once its done i will enter into the SEMA builders contest.
I might look for a 9.8 strength bolt since it will have same strength at those in it .
I can buy a junk head for $200 but i dont want to buy a whole head for one bolt
Krewat posted a picture above. It looks like there's a shoulder on it. You see it in real life though: is that shoulder vital to something? Because if it's not, just go get a hardware store replacement.
9.8 is a metric fastener, a little stronger than grade 5 but not even as strong as grade 8.
It's just a bolt. There's no magic involved. Go get another bolt. Get a proper washer if you need it, and then clean the threads and torque properly. You'll be fine.
thanks, im50fast. I like the arp cam tower studs. Im going to see what my friend can get them for.
problem is, the v10 motor is so big. if i have a problem i have to remove the fenders & front end out to remove motor. I want to be 100% sure. I have marked every bolt i tighten to make sure its torqued right and documented it.
Im going to enter it into the SEMA builders contest when done. So i want to show my skills
I wish I would have taken better pics now. Like I said I used some random 10mm headed (believe the thread pitch is 6x1.25) bolt that was the right length and threw it in. The bolt was from some honda I parted out and did have a small shoulder on it. Nothing special on the cam caps for the bolts.
You can barely see it in this pic, it is at the top middle of the balance shaft/cam cap.
You get this figured out? I am in the process of removing my cam sprockets and can get dimensions for you if needed.
Let me know if you need the cam cap bolt or another bolt... the balance shaft cap bolts are only torqued to 7.5ft lbs. I wouldn't worry about using a standard bolt at a hardware store if you can find one that matches.
4x4pwr, if you have 2 cam cap bolts , I'll buy them from you
I have to return my old heads complete so I don't get charged for the cores.... otherwise I would just give them to you. Don't want to chance loosing 500 bucks because I was short 2 bolts.
I will get measurements of the cam cap bolts though.
For the record, having dealt with cam sprocket bolts in the past, the "shoulder" on the cam sprocket bolt is to fit in the sprocket hole and keep it from moving around.
But I guess this is all about the cam journal studs
