I have a 1966 F100 custom cab style side truck. I've been having problems with the electrical system. The truck will start up fine and idle somewhat smooth. When I rev the engine up to about 2500 RPM it starts backfiring thru the exhaust and running real rough. The new items that I have installed are edelbrock carb., one wire alternator, and a HEI distributor. I've checked the timing, checked plugs, checked for any loose wires and I'm drawing a blank. Any advise will be great. Thanks
It ran O.K. before I added those new parts. After I installed the new parts it ran like a champ. I did one simple little burnout and it started to run like crap after.

Start with the basics. Bring #1 piston TDC compression, observe where distributor rotor points. Should be just shy of the #1 spark plug wire terminal location. With wrench on balancer bolt turn crankshaft back and forth, note how much slop before rotor starts to turn. It may be the timing chain is loose, and the engine skipped timing? Just a WAG.
Yep, "backfire" through carb or exhaust is basically a timing problem. A vacuum gauge connected to manifold vacuum source would be useful, if it turns out that the valve/timing chain is OK.
