Two of the new pads have a much larger chamfer in the top and bottom leading corners as compared to the other two pads. Do the pads with the larger chamfer mount against the piston side of the caliper?
...looking for help with this one as I have an abrupt vibration that has started since swapping the brakes (around 27-22 mph). I found that the rear brake shoes were reversed (thanks to help from another post) and correcting help, but still chasing the issue. I also rotated the tires at the time of the brake change, so another variable. I happened to have an extra set of the front pads in the garage, so I compared them closely and noticed the difference in chamfers. I'm not sure of which orientation I installed the ones on the truck. If no advice, I plan to pull the new ones and place the large chamfer on the piston side of each brake and see how the truck responds. Thanks in advance.
If I'm missing something, but the smaller pad goes between the piston and the rotor, whereas the longer pad goes on the outer side, between the caliper and the rotor.
Maybe if you had a pic of what your describing.
Sorry if that wasn't much help.
Also shaking at around 30-45 while stepping/applying the brake pedal indicates warped rotor(s).
Appreciate the response. Installed new rotors and drums. Then took new ones off and turned all four (vibration started after brake change and tire rotation). Front pads look to be identical, other than the chamfer edge of the friction material. I'll grab a pair of calipers and measure for variation more precisely. Can you better describe "smaller pad"? Is the friction material somehow smaller (not as thick or simply less coverage) or is the pad bracket which the friction material is attached smaller in size?
The first one just shows the two different pads side by side. I cannot find a difference in measurement. The second one focuses on the only difference I can identify. The chamfer is larger on two of the four pads, but only on the top of the pad. Note: The pictured pads are not the ones on the truck, but are the same brand, Napa Ultra Premium.
I just did brakes on a '95. Is this a '94-97 truck?
Reason I ask is that 1 pad should have spring clips that lock it on the outboard part of the caliper. The other pad should slide between the piston and rotor.
If I get the tire off today to do tie rods, I will shoot a pic of my description.
Wind chill here is near 0°, but will try.
