I have a 1979 shortbed and was wondering about how to convertthe rear end to disc brakes and get rI'd of the drum. I know u can buy a conversion kit but what about swapping out a rearend of a later model shortbed truck. What will work if it's possible

Got a Ford 9, right? Visit TSM Manufacturing... disc rear systems for around $400 or so. Links in the Tech Info Compilation.....
Yes, a later model disced rear is possible but you'll have to deal with repositioning the leaf pads and, IIRC, the shock brackets. The 9-inch is more versatile... I can swap out a pumpkin to change the gear ratio in less than one hour... try that with an 8.8!
Make sure you will still have an e-brake capability. Some kits do not come with the correct caliper, or at least the caliper does not have a place to connect you e brake cable end. Some people use the Cadillac Eldorado caliper set up.
