Got a 93 explorer sport 4x4, I would like to convert my drum brake rear end to disc, but when i see the prices for a quality conversion kit ( low end) $800.00 i started thinking about going to my favorite junk yard and picking up a rear end with disc,s factory installed and swapping them. ($ 200 ) i figure after buying rotors calipers and whatever else I,ll still save about $400minimum I would appreciate any imput/ advise
thank you

This will have to be custom, obviously right? None of the explorer straight rear axels came with disc brakes...none that I've seen. So if you find one out of a Mustang or something like that, you'll have to perform due diligence in checking the axel widths and leaf spring and shocks mounting geometries. Finally, the drive shaft might have to change. A lot of Mustangs came with 8.8 rears so you might get lucky.
I swear 95-later Exploder rear axles are disc-equipped.
Other than the width of the axle, if that is even different, this should bolt right in place of what you have. You might have to get the disc brake emergency brake cables and some other bits, though.
95 and later ARE disc equipped checked out a 99 today. couldnt measure it though didnt have permission. so if all dimensions are the same I shouldnt have any problems bolting it up, correct? so long as i get the correct gearing.
Does the rear disk brake model have a proportioning valve? Or is the hydraulic pressure the same front and rear, as opposed to lower pressure to drum brakes?
