Mike a hole saws works great for getting the inner rubber out.
Then a cutting torch or sawall can open up a relief area throughout it then knock out the shell with a hammer & punch. A small Wire wheel the inside rusted bushing area worked for me with an air drill real easy.
But if using a sawall one must be carful not to cut into inner spring eye bushing area.
Carbide. Look for a "miners lamp", same principle, the addition of H2O + calcium carbide = Acetylene. The bang-site carbide cannon for sale in the back of Boys Life and other magazines use the gas for the noisemaker. They are loud. Great toy. The headlights probably worked so-so but had to be a PITA. You can be sure this was a job for the younguns. Emptying the ash and muck, re-filling etc.
to funny American Pickers had 2 of those cannons on the show last night .
The youth of today are missing out on the good old toys that could harm/injury you .LOL
I uh, well a friend, bought one. Right. And didn't expect much. One Fourth of July we were in an alley with a little bit of echo, and setting off different stuff. That thing was deafening, couldn't believe it.
I ordered some of the F-5781-5 bushings and I don't know that they are right. There is a metal casing around the outside of them. Is that right? The won't fit in the spring as is. Below are some pictures.

Gees you have to remove the inner shell then clean it good the a wire wheel on a hand drill and lube up good so it will go in. I used a long bolt with washers to pull it in as I tighten it..

2X Orich. You cleaned out the original rubber great if you were going to install Poly bushings. Since they reuse the original bushing's outer sleeve. Your rubber replacements DO come with a new outer sleeve. So you have to remove the original outer sleeves out of the spring eyes 1st. Note. The original sleeves and the replacement bushing's outer sleeve are a "friction fit". So they won't slid out and back in with ease. Use Orich's idea of long bolt, washers, and nut or a vise. Being real careful with a vise.
Thanks guys. I didn't know that there was an inner sleeve. I've never changed leaf spring bushings before.
I'll try to hacksaw out the inner sleeve. It don't look like it will drive out.
Use a punch to bend them in on the outer lips use a lot of wd-40 or other lube and use a BFH & chisel to get them out. Or a cutting torch will work just heat the shell cut it.
**** out with a BFH. Or have a air chisel.
I've done them with a hack saw and feel your pain.

Jeff I've always had to remove the inner steel shell sleeves to install poly bushings. A perfect fit in the spring eye hole for the one's I've installed front & rear on all my 4wd spring eyes.
May be on others vehicles that you've have done used the steel sleeve.

Exactly. All the poly bushings I've installed have used the original outer sleeve. Ya might consider keeping them greased with either a zerk fitting or some of that sticky silicone grease the bushings come with. Seems to me the inner surface of the spring eyes are as rough textured as the outer surface. Unless you smoothed out the inner surface with something like a reamer.
