disk brake conversion done!

Spent the weekend working in the garage with my son. We finished up the power disk brake conversion and made all new brake lines from stem to stern. Bled the brakes and put the truck back on its wheels for the first time in a month. We had installed new leaf springs on all four corners along with all new bushings. Once the truck was on the ground we noticed we still had a distinct lean to the passengers side. This was the main reason for replacing the springs and the problem still exists. I took a look at the body mounts and they are all nice and solid and the rubber pads look old but solid. A tape measures shows over 1 1/4 inch difference from the drivers to passenger wheel opening to the ground. I'm looking for ideas where to look now.

Anyway we took a quick little test drive down our dirt road and the truck was great! The rebuilt trans, new clutch, rebuilt drive shaft and new (to us) 3.25 rear gears really worked smoothly. The 262 seems like it has plenty of power to push the truck down the road and we got it up to around 50 or so with lots of power left. The new brake system will need to be rebled because the adaptor I rigged up for the brake switch leaked and we sucked some air back into the system. The power front disk brakes worked nicely and the truck stopped great.

The disk brake upgrade is the best upgrade I've done to my truck thus far. I really wanted to keep it all orginal but I like to way it now stops on the wet roads.....

Agreed. We want to keep the truck as original as possible but after driving it last fall with drum brakes the decision to convert was made. We want to be able to pull a trailer with it also. Gotta have good brakes.

What brake setup did you use?

Did you just swap in brakes from a later model truck or go with a kit?

The truck is a 64 so no swap that I know of. I purchased the kit from Speedway motors. Everything fit nicely and seem to be good quality.

How did they set up your brake light switch? Is it still on the master?

The system converted the truck from a single to dual reservoir system, and used a pushrod from the pedal to activate the lights. I'm not entirely sure how it all came together though

MichiganLarry,

I'm considering the same brake kit, does your 64 still have the stock innie wheels? I've heard some say there may be clearance issues with the brake caliper.

More pictures, please!!!

It does not have the stock innies. I have 4 innie wheels from Summit in the boxes to go on when we can paint them. The wheels on the truck now have the outie nubs and fit just fine. We added this power dual master http://www.ebay.com/itm/281671380453?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT. Nice fit. Now I need to figure out how to put the brake light switch into the system. A couple shots of the booster and master.

And a couple from the disk conversion:

I used this kit and kept the stock wheels. I had a mechanic friend install them for me, but I distinctly remember having to grind off a part of the calipers to make them fit. The really truck stops great, I have only had one true emergency stop while driving and the truck performed very well (aside from only the front left wheel locking up on me)

There is a ridge on the back of the calipers that I had to grind off. Not a big deal. 5 minutes on the bench grinder and it fits fine.
