I use what all too many don't to find things priced realistically and that's patience. Sooner or later goodies of sorts turn up when you don't expect to. Many just want certain items out of the garage because they don't have room or they're exiting the hobby or their wife is constantly nagging them to get rid of his stuff which she sees as junk. Although it may not be 100% correct, I did find a super nice 1972 tailgate that will look good on my '69 for $65.
There are many insanely priced items on e-bay and 3 years later some of them are still on there like the $351 1973-77 speedometer, just one example.
$900 for a tail gate? LOL Back in the early 90's i paid $3500. just for 1 right rear quarter panel for my 70 chevelle SS i was restoring. Back then there was no repop's and to find a OEM one was rare so, 900 for a tail gate if its perfect is fair but,ive found 2 here in Michigan rust free couple small dents for $200. each.
I have a brand new OEM Ford Dent side tailgate in the original box that I picked up at a Ford dealer where the parts guy was cleaning old stuff out and found it behind some rack .... he sold it to me for 50% of last price he had then which was several years old then ... seems it was near $150 ..... and I jumped on it. That was mid 1990s ..... it's been in a dehumidified reasonably warm basement ever since.
I'd sell it for $8-900 ...... if I already sold the truck. But for now ..... I'll keep it.
there's a really long story in my sig about the aquisition of that truck, but the super short version is: owner was selling at a dealer on commission. originally wanted $3,300, then went down to $2,800, then it sat for a year because everyone in WI wants 4x4. then guy gives in and tells dealer "get whatever you can". dealer doesn't know what he has, asks $1,000. my husband offers $800. boom. we stole a low miles, maintained (with reciepts) truck with everything working properly, and a motor that was replaced some time in the 90s, and then a week later we drove 900 miles with it hauling a trailer after having done nothing more than an oil change. (yeah. that's how good condition this truck was in!)

like i said... i REALLY lucked out
Great story!
My story: Was looking for a highboy, saw a '72 almost bought it, and it got pulled from under my feet. Found a '73 a day later, guy wanted 3500 for it. Called him a few days later, he had a guy looking at it. Great, another one gone. Wrong! Called a day later, truck there, and their shop was about to go under. All the cash I had at the time was $984, and I threw in an old stick welder for the guy to help him out. Done deal!
As an aside, the bed I had to buy for mine is the exact color scheme and trim as yours.
