My X has right at 200K miles and is tired. Looking at a reman V10 from Ford, but my mechanic/friend wants to know how it comes out. It certainly seems the traditional route is a lot less painful than pulling the body. Anyone know? 2002 X
If you were talking a 6.4 Powerstroke, by all means lift the cab. Since you're talking about a V10 cab lifting isn't necessary. It comes right out the front. Easily at that
It's lacking power, has been for a while and the cold star knocking is getting worse. It's not an immediate need, but I am just getting prepared. Short block from Ford is $2000 and change, $1000 to my buddy to install(me helping), and all the remaining items to complete the short block. Once complete, another $600 for tune and y-pipe, and $400 for new leather front seat bottoms. I figure $5000 and it's good-to-go(I hope).
Noticed your location is the same as mine, which means we might be within 100 miles of each other...lol. I'm in the Brownwood area, 20-ish miles from the geographic center of Tx.

That's debatable I think the geo center is approximately 150 Miles in diameter LOL
I'm much farther South, in Blanco
My brother is in the process of replacing his V10 himself. He said it was easy enough to remove the headlights, grill, radiator etc on the front and then just use an engine hoist and pull it.
You can read up on his progress over at the Super Duty forums here.
Cold start knock....Are you using the Motorcraft FL-820S oil filter? It has a very good anti-drainback valve in it that many other filters lack, if the oil is draining back then that can contribute to additional cold start noises. Just something else to consider.

Only on a very few occasions do I use anything but a Motorcraft filter. I use full synthetic too.
